I have the first edition, and wondered what - apart from the fact that the timeline has been advanced beyond any reckoning - reasons I would have to buy this book...

I played L5R in first edition with borrowed books. Our group completely ignored the second edition. Now were gettong set to change over to 3rd edition and I picked up the new book.

The mechanics for the new editon are basically what we had with the original, but the book is far better organized. The table of contents is very detailed and helps you find things quickly.

The skills have been enhanced to provide additional benfits to insight for achieving certain levels of competancy.

The best change, however, comes in the rules handling magic. The magic has been reorganized with mastery levels of spells more clearly defined. Also, there are now mechanical benefits and penalties for the various shugenja schools to go along with the flavor reasons for schools to have strengths and weaknesses in the varied elements.

Overall, I think the new edition is definitely worth the investment. It is better organized, concise, and has compiled alot of the character creation information from the various Way supplements into one place to be the best overall guide to the world of Rokugan to get a player started and keep the non-campaign specific information in one place.
