I am trying to remember the plot of Supreme Commander or Universe at War. I think Supreme Commander had some characters involved, but I don't remember whether there was any space opera stuff to it. Maybe check out if that would that be more to your liking?
Or maybe Grey Goo? (Made by the people that also made Command & Conquer). One of the factions is... grey goo.

In general I consider video games to have low storytelling standards. Most of the time, story is an entirely optional thing, like it is in pornos. I just want stories that aren’t blatantly stupid when they do appear.

Starcraft is about how a swarm of alien bugs go on a wild goose chase for an insert of the writer’s girlfriend and exalt her to messiah status. That’s blatantly stupid, like bad b-movie stupid, and saying so shouldn’t be controversial. Yet you’d be amazed by how many people I’ve talked to who think Starcraft is the pinnacle of storytelling and any criticism is heresy.
