How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

IMHO, AI won't catch on until it can actually change course based on player actions and decisions.

Players always think of things that you didn't, and the GM needs to be able to adapt on the fly.

Can AI really do that effectively now? I don't think so.
It can though. Easily.

I'm sure someone will provide a passable AI GM in the not too distant future. A GM bot isn't that dissimilar from a call center bot, and AI call center bots are becoming a fairly standard tool for businesses. If nothing else, I could see one or more hobbyists cobbling together an AI GM of some sort.

But I don't think TTRPGs are where the proverbial money is. AI in gaming is really going to shine when a studio releases the first big-name CRPG with integrated LLM functionality. CRPGs have made use of primitive "AI" for decades, so upgrading them with actual, cutting-edge AI is the obvious next step.

I would quit RPG's. At some point it is beyond spoiling a game.
If it gets to where I can't even tell it's an AI anymore, then I don't know. A phone sitting at the head of a table surrounded by my warm-blooded friends wouldn't be too bad.... I wouldn't love it, but I think I could live with it.

The bigger concern is whether I'd still have a job to be able to afford the house we're presumably playing in.

Call center bots are expert systems. They have to be programmed manually.

I imagine that at the point TTRPG publishers become video game publishers, new markets for TTRPGs will become apparent. At the point where you're logging onto a VTT to play game run by an AI, you're playing a co-operative video game.

Folks have video games already. And future BG3 type games will have AI-powered NPCs and real-time AI plot generation, blurring the line even further. Publishers turning their TTRPGs into video games just means there's more room for new publishers who want to publish TTRPGs.

It's all good. Folks will still want to gather with their friends round a table.

Don't worry. There will always be people who want to make and play TTRPGs.
I agree if for no other reason than the bloodcurdling aversion many have to the idea of AI-generated material. The revulsion will sustain entire industries and hobbies for a while.

Hopefully. I could always use the time lost with cars, pets; though it would be one more link severed.
How about when they sell robot dogs with AI personalities? It's a dog, but it can also ask you, "Hi, dragoner, how was your day? I missed you!"
