Anybody waiting for Star Wars: Revelations?

Oh, Troops is a classic and that's what started it all, but have you actually seen Star Wars in 30 Minutes? Its so great.

Sadly, its not technically a fan film, but a fan production...but still, its just great if you get a chance to see it. I believe they'll be at Celebration III this year. Or is that the One Man Star Wars? One of them, I think...

EDIT: Note that the site's not been updated in a long while, but TheForce.net has reported they'll probably be at Celebration III.

Its a fine line to tread, definitely. And I don't know the details, but I do know that Lucas is a huge fan of these fan films, so that probably has a lot to do with why they're allowed to be done.

He even did a fan films panel/awards thing at the last SW Celebration convention. So, he's open to fan films as long as they're tastefully done.

Yeah, I've read that Lucas was both amused and impressed by Troops, and he doesn't really mind fan films being made.

IANAL, but regarding the legality of this (and other fan works), I believe it falls under Derivative Works law, which states (paraphrased) that any work created using the intellectual, copyrighted property of someone else falls under the copyright owner's jurisdiction, except under certain conditions. While failure to take a stance for or against fan-media can not be used as an argument to void a copyright, most owners don't tend to care one way or the other. There are a few exceptions on either side... Lucas obviously approves of fan stuff, Robert Jordan is notorious for not allowing it.

The most notable aspect of DW law is how it applies to websites, which last I knew there had been more rulings in favor of treating fansites as derivative works. However, again, IANAL, so I don't keep up on it as much as I would were I one. It's just a fascinating topic to me, is all.

Me, if I wrote or created something that was incredibly popular I would allow fansites/fanfic/fanmoves based on my work, as long as the fansites did give me credit for it. After all, tis free publicity.
