Anyone have an OA honor points system?

BButler

First Post
I'm getting ready to start my players off in a non-Rogukan Oriental Adventures campaign, and I'm looking for a way to quantify honor a bit.

I've looked at the 1e honor points system, and I can't seem to make it cross-over into 3e very well. And I particularly don't like the idea that a player's character can be so honorable that the player's _next_ character gets bonuses. I do, however, want to be able to give honor awards and to have them affect the game.

Anyone have any Ideas or suggestions?

Thank you,
B

No ideas really, just thought I'd mention a couple of rpg resources that you might enjoy...

Bushido by Fantasy Games Unlimited (waaaay oop and defunct) is probably one of the best ever for this genre.

On a more contemporary note, Sengoku has a lot of good info.

Hackmaster has an extensive honor system, but I don't think it would be applicable to 3e.

If you made honor points rare enough and non-regenerating (sort of like force points in WEG Star Wars) you could allow a character to re-roll each time he expended a point. It would be up to you as to what rolls you would normally allow this on i.e. skill, attack, damage, saves, for self, for enemy, etc...

You could also keep track of negative honor points. Not only would the character not have any honor to spend in tight situations, but it could also take him a long series of consistently honorable actions, with no immediate benefit, to climb out of the "honor hole".

As another option, perhaps only for certain classes, you could assign an experience penalty to dishonorable types--in addition to the negative reactions they would enjoy from those who know their true nature.

Anyway, just a few odd thoughts :)

Rokugan, by AEG, has a point based honor system.

However, I doubt that you want to spend $30 just for that 1/2 page.

Basically, they have a honor rating that goes 0-5, with 0 being reserved for creatures that can never have honor.

Most characters start out at honor 1. Each point of honor is further divided into 10 sub-points.

Making particularly honorable/dishonorable actions will change your current score by as much as 5 sub-points. However, the more honorable you are, the more honorable your actions have to be to gain honor. (For example, if you have an honor score of 1, being civil to your sworn enemy will gain you 5 sub-points; but if your honor is already 4 then doing so won't gain you any honor. You are already expected to follow the rules of Bushido.)

The same applies for dishonorable acts, except that most of these have a point value about twice as large as the honorable acts. It is much easier to lose honor than to gain it.

Sorry, but that's about as good as I can do without that book in front of me.

May or may not be helpful...

I use a point based honor system for my Celtic campaign. With a little work, the same mechanics could probably be used for an OA campaign. The 3e conversion of the 2e Celts Historical reference is in the Conversion Library and contains the system (Look for the chapter on Enech, the Irish word for honor.)

My slightly modified version:

Thanks to all for your help. I think I just might use a system based on the 1e OA honor system, melded with the celtic system a bit.

I suppose if I ever get anything specivic worked out, I'll post it here.
