Anyone Help with: ECL Large Half-Orc

Anyone mind telling me where to look to figure out the ECL for a Large Half Orc Character, or if they happen to know it off hand, that would be even better.

Thanks.

By the book? Treat him as an ogre. How did he get large?

The character grew abnormally, allowing him to become a large creature. No magic or anything, just natural growth, just a lot of it.

ECL Calculations Page:

This page has calculations on it, but the wording makes it hard to understand....

http://csserver.evansville.edu/~jc84/DD3/Monster_ECL.htm

"Calculate the average ability modifiers for each ability score, subtract 10 if the score is even, subtract 11 if the score is odd. (e.g. a score of 7 is 7 - 11 = -4, a score of 20 is 20 - 10 = +10.)"

Now is that the Ability Modifer, or the ability Score that they are subtracting 11/10 from?

Well, let's see..

A normal half orc has 1 hit die, +2 str, -2 Int, -2 Cha, when he goes to large size he will gain +8 Str, +4 Con, -2 Dex, +1 natural armor and reach. So that's a total of +10 to Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha and all the other goodies that being large gives you. Now an oger is pretty similar but has the advantage of 4 extra hit dice and better natural armor but has the disadvantage of a -4 to Int, -2 To Wis, and -4 to Cha. Dragon magazine places an ogre at ECL 8, your large half orc while not as potent as an ogre is still pretty tough, I would say he is a little weaker than a half dragon which is ECl 5, and would place him at ECL4.

Thats just a rough estimate, but I think its pretty fair with the huge stat boosts and reach.

Is he a half orc who happens to be large sized or did you augment his stats as well?

The Half Orc just happens to be Large Size, the only benefit I gave him was the reach, no stat boosts (Other than Half Orc Normal Ones).

If all he gets is reach, then I wouldn't give him any ECL at all. The MM has, I believe, pretty good rules for what a size increase does to the stats -- if you ignore that, then you might as well not worry about ECLs. You might also want to check out the PDF WotC distributed of their monster making article in Dragon a while back -- some good rules for what size does in there as well. Also, d20 Modern has essentially the same rules, although it is (IMO) a clearer and better constructed presentation of those rules.

I'd go with ecl +1 then. Reach is pretty darn good so I think this will help balance that out.
