anyone interested in d20 sports?

Jeez. Is Pennsylvania in an anti-magic zone, or something? I do that like pretty much every day.

I have some rules for d20 Boxing I was kicking around. How about a d20 Olympics!?

If you're doing a team sport, you could, for example, have groups of players as the 'one character' model and the 'movers and shakers' as individuals. I'm thinking specifically about American Football, where you have a front line, which consists of a bunch of fat lugs that no one wants to play, then a backfield on offense and secondary on defense. If you had four players per side, they could each be quarterback, running back(s), and wide receiver(s), and everyone could control the front line, or something. On defense, you have safeties, corners and linebackers that could fit the PC bill...

I remember a futuristic football game back in the late 80's where your team consisted of various types of robots. The ball was a bomb that exploded if you didn't get a first down within four downs. And your robots actually took damage and had to be carted off the field throughout the game (i.e. if you were carrying the ball when it exploded). I always wanted to make a tabletop version of that game. Anyone remember it?

Cyberball... I play it on MAME all the time.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. :)

I loved that game even though I was terrible at it.

Back to the original topic: I think a spellflag/football type game using the d20/OGL rules would be great. You'd probably have to simplify the rules some, but it could be big fun.

After a game, each team could get an award in both GP (for equipment) and XP. You could match up teams based on CR/EL.

I'm willing to contribute if punkorange is interested.

I was considering an Olympics d20 mini-game with my buddies. I think I did something like:

Long Jump:

Main Skill: Jump

Part One: Takeoff
Leading up to the jump, the athlete may announce that she is trying to get perfect foot placement in order to maximize her jump. This requires a Concentration check performed during the approach, DC 15 plus 3 for each +1 that the player desires to increase her Jump result. On a success, the athlete hits her mark and gains a bonus on her primary jump check. The athlete receives an additional +1 for each 5 points by which she succeeded.

On a failure, the athlete takes a penalty on the jump check equal to double the amount by which she missed the concentration check. On a failure by more than 5, the athlete scratches, and her attempt is forfeited.

An athlete who does not wish to improve her jump check does not have to attempt this roll.

Part Two: Distance
The athlete makes a Jump check, using the penatlies or bonuses from the Takeoff section as appropriate. Stacking synergy bonuses may apply from having 5 or more ranks in Tumble, Climb, or Knowledge (Tactics -- used here for athletic tactics and body positioning study).

A hero with the Extreme Effort talent may use it for this Jump check.

Part Three: Landing
The athlete makes a Balance check to maximize her position with a perfect landing. For every 2 points by which the athlete beats DC20, she adds +1 to her effective Jump result. If the athlete fails to beat DC20, she receives an effective -2 penalty to her Jump check for each point by which she failed as she falls backward or lets her foot touch the ground too early.

The athlete may take 10 on any of these checks provided that she succeeds on a Will save (DC 5 for compulsories or qualification heats, DC 10 for quarterfinals, DC 15 for semifinals, DC 20 for finals -- with +5 being added to the DC if the event is of major importance, like a world championship or Olympic event). Failure on the Will save results in the athlete becoming shaken for all checks made during the attempt, as her nerves get the better of her despite her attempts to maintain an air of cool composure.

That's the Long Jump. The Pole Vault would have something similar, albeit with Jump for the takeoff, Climb for the main haul, and Tumble for the "Over the bar" section. Enough skill checks that anybody can try, but someone who really max'd out their character would have some big bonuses...

How about the classic Rollerball? Armor, skates, and motorcycles - seems like the perfect Modern game.

Of course, so does Deathrace 2000.

Sports like skiing, board riding, and cycling are already covered by Balance, according to Urban Arcana.

Last night I was puzzling out how to play football/soccer - Jump checks for the goalie to block a kick, with a bonus for being ahead on the initiative count. Kicking the ball could be treated as a ranged attack with a thrown weapon. Slipping past a tackle would be opposed Strength or Dexterity checks.

Must....get....Mame...

Thanks!

On topic: I'd be interested in participating in design, if this becomes 'a thing.' If we did a d20 Olympics set of rules (as modern w/ magic, or straight modern), we should host an online convention on par with the actual Olympics and have awards and whatnot. That could really raise awareness in gamers that might not have considered that particular use of the rules and get some great publicity.

Drakeslayer Denies Use of Performance-Enhancing Magic

Eric "Drakeslayer" Michaels denied accusations that he used performance-enhancing magical equipment during the 2004-2005 season with the Philadelphia Paladins.

"Everybody tries to put the hate on Drakeslayer," Michaels said in a televised press conference, "but everything I've done, that's been me. You try to pretend that I'm using a Glove of Infielding or a Vorpal Bat, but I've never been charged, never even been accused. So this is just a trial by the press, and you can say whatever you like. The fans will know the truth."

Michaels has been plagued by rumors of using performance-enhancing magic ever since a media reporter claimed to have caught Michaels on divination video that showed him receiving some form of enhancement bonus. While Michaels did not specifically deny the incident, which took place during a charity "Slay-a-thon" event, he insisted that the magical device was only providing him with an enhancement bonus to Wisdom -- a bonus that Michaels insists is common for media personalities who wish to avoid embarrassing blunders while performing live.

But Joseph "Trollsbane" Cancerto insists that Michaels is using performance-enhancing magic during the games. "It's been like that ever since that stuff's been around," the retired player declared in his recent autobiography. "They can tell if you've got a strength-booster or luck-bonus equipment on there, so guys start putting on Wisdom-boosting items and then taking Faith from the Insightful Talent Tree -- which lets them add their Wisdom bonus whenever they use an Action Point to improve a roll. Or they drink a potion of Fox's Cunning and then go with Exploit Weakness from the Smart Hero's Strategy Talent Tree, so they're using Intelligence to hit."

Michaels dismissed Cancerto's claims as the "attention-starved ravings of an athlete who hasn't been a real troll-bane since nonlethal damage got altered for d20 Modern."

I recently wrote an article detailing a d20 sport called Bloodball for EN World Gamer. Unfortunately, the magazine is now dead, but apparently there's still hope for a PDF release. Not sure how much it would fit some of the ideas discussed here (especially since it does track individual players in a round by round, combat style game), but I hope it would appeal to gamers interested in throwing a D&D party into a sports arena.

And, an interesting note, I had never heard of Blood bowl when I wrote this, and I have no idea how similar they are.

This is excellent.

And, Macbeth, if EN World Gamer isn't going to use that article, any chance of putting it up? Sounds cool.

Of course. If EN Gamer doesn't use the work, I will post it. However, I think it's going to be used for SOMETHING, since it was all edited, reviewed, and ready to go in the next issue from what I understand.
