Anyone know when D20 Modern/Future Might Be Out?

While I'm not a fan of the changes to D&D, the basic system itself sounds pretty decent and am interested in it for a Modern or Future game. Has Wizards discussed anything about their plans for Modern/Future d20?

There has been nothing said about it outside of the re-org done a while back that ended a few positions and Gleemax, to "focus on D&D and Magic".

So that may imply there will not be a new modern/future/etc system.

There were some vague thoughts about a possible new version of d20 Modern during the pre-release phase, but nothing substantial enough to make me thing that it's actually in the works or there is any release plan for it.

So yes, pity. I once started a big thread on possible ideas for d20 Modern 2.0, and I think there were others...

Those playing Modern would like to keep it as quiet as possible, lest we worry about 4e contaminating the well. There's plenty of 3rd party materials and 'fixes' around, along with Modern20, to supplant the need for WotC deciding to 'remake' Modern.

I think WotC might be focusing more on a steady 4E release schedule. I am not sure if they want to spend resources on d20 Modern.
But I won't give up hope, and maybe WotC will see it as an option to expand their "user base" a little more - not everyone RPGer prefers fantasy, and at some point, the market for fantasy might be a little too satiated so that offering some other options might be viable. (Of course, this could also be the point for 5E )

Or at least imply that we aren't likely to get an official announcement anytime soon. I'd guess that late spring would be the earliest that we might get an announcement and that an announcement at GenCon is more likely (and you might do better betting that we won't even get word then).

I think that a new edition of d20M based on SWSE would have the potential to capture a prominent role in the market as a generic rules set. 4e is great for the epic fantasy that D&D is known for. But, I just don't see how it could translate to flexible rule set in the way that d20M was intended to support a wide range of genres, if not styles of play. A new version of d20M would give Wizards a chance to recapture interest in d20 for other genres.

Q: Will there be a Game System License for non-fantasy d20-based roleplaying
games?
A: Yes. We plan to release a Game System License for non-fantasy setting products in
the near future. This license will be named the d20 GSL and will be posted when final.

Not that we have any reason to think they'll ever get around to this, but I wonder how it would have worked, without a non-fantasy ruleset to base it on?
