Anyone pick up the Liber Bestarius yet?

I haven't seen it anywhere nearby (and I've been looking!) Are contributors getting copies, or will I have to order it from somewhere?

Salutations,

My LGS is a bunch of flubs, and Talon Comics has not updated recently. I am going to have to find an alternate route to get it.

My LGS had it, but unfortunately with dropping $40 bucks on ELH and $20 on the book of challenges - my wallet is a touch light for a short period.

But take comfort in that the LGS had it right up front as one of thier featured products (right next to ELH)

My thoughts...

Grabbed it, went through it over the weekend. Here are my quick thoughts (not trying to be good or bad, just honest)...

Author's Foreword... to be honest, I found it offensive and unprofessional due to the dropping of "s--- bombs and reference to "f bombs" (though f was not spelled out as s was)" I don't need to see that material ANYWHERE in my gaming library. I can put up with a "d" or an "h" or even the odd "a." I can put up with occasional topless women (as long as it's done tastefully). But I draw the line at "s." I can't phrase strongly enough my disappointment at the level of unprofessionalism here.

(As a completely unrelated aside, I note that the Foreword was written in Orange County, CA. That's where I live, so you blokes are locals! :) )

Monsters themselves - largely cool, good job with the stats and LOVED the illustrations. These are nifty monsters, though I thought it was bad gaming form to say, "these are supposed to be super tough - the CR's really should be adjusted by one upward." Why are you artificially lowering the CRs? Is it to make the monsters "bigger and better" than what's already out there? That seems to be the worst type of "power escalation" for "munchkin DMs." A minor complaint (related to the complaint on author's foreword)The "X Badass" entry for characters made from a given race seemed a bit unprofessional and juvenile though.

Price: Content ratio - average, I guess. I felt even though it was a hardcover, the content was a bit slim.

On the whole - I liked the monsters themselves - wonderful illustration, lots of inventive concepts - but the tone of the book outside of the monsters themselves came off as juvenile, unprofessional, and "munchkin DM-esque" (as in, "Well, I'll just throw bigger, badder creatures at you and give you less XP!")

Again, not trying to bash here - you guys know your stuff with monsters (the good) but the tone of the work came across as very badly immature (the bad).

Bottom line: Loved the monsters and highly recommend the monsters themselves, but not so much the "iconic" monsters (X Badass) and certainly NOT the whole of the book.
