Anyone playing Swords & Wizardry?

FATDRAGONGAMES

First Post
I keep going back to this and wanting to run a few games (the core version). Anyone else playing it? Suggestions/comments welcome. I'm thinking of using it for a 'mini' campaign for a few old friends.

If you've played the Moldvay/Cook edit of D&D then you've played SWORDS & WIZARDRY. That's really about it. Pretty much the same gotchas, bugs, perks and cool stuff. Drop your Karamekios or Ylarum or just about anywhere in the Known World campaign right in and rock on.

Decided my post was off topic.

I have copies of all the clones mentioned, but haven't given them a playtest yet with an actual group.

Actually I find S&W to be closer to the OD&D rules ( 3 classes, races and classes separate) than to Molvay basic. Labyrinth Lord does Moldvay/Cook/Marsh more closely IMHO.

Either way it looks like a fine system for adventuring in the Known World as mentioned.

Gah! Thank you, LABYRINTH LORD is what I was thinking of. Carry on.

Yeah, I've run LL for my son and his friends and had a blast with it (I still say the Moldvay Basic set was the clearest, most concise version of D&D ever produced, a masterpiece. What Goblinoid Games did with LL is nothing short of astounding. I've just had a burr up my butt to run a true OD&D campaign at some point and thought S&W would be a good start as none of the other players would have the three booklet set.

If you are up to a little work, the actual OD&D rules and supplements are available for download and there are instructions (Dragonsfoot has them IIRC) for printing and assembling the pdfs to resemble the original booklets. Players would only need the Men and Magic book anyway. The pdf costs are reasonable, S&W is free or it can be ordered in hardcopy for a very reasonable pirce as well. There are lots of options for old school gaming out there now.

BTW I agree 100% about Moldvay Basic.

Nope, but I wish I was. I wish that I was running a lot of stuff. Powers & Perils. Rolemaster. TWERPS. Dragonquest. High Fantasy. Fantasy Wargaming. Etc, etc., etc.

I love the way S&W encourages you to customize it rather than run it as is. I keep thinking I’ll use it as a base for a variant oD&D I’ve been wanting to run. I’ve promised myself to concentrate on working on campaigns to run with existing rules rather than continually tinkering with homebrew rules for now, though.
