Anyone seeing Hellboy today?

random comments:

whats with the people avoiding opening night crowds? does your seat get any bigger? you just gotta go a little earlier to snag a seat, but in return, you dont have to avoid threads or walk away from conversations for fear of being spoiled.
my DM hates opening weekend crowds, and its soooo annoying when we have to not talk about stuff around him. When I suggested we go Sat night after d&d he said "no, too many people, but if you want to go friday morning, count me in"

also, if the new gf is making your decisions, point out to her that hellboy has the romance story in it :-P
i like wrestling and the rock, but walking tall looks atrocious.

and PLEASE, make a hellboy SPOILERS thread for post-viewng discussion, i do NOT want to have highlight spoilers tags for a whole thread.

I like to catch movies like this on opening day during the day, work permitting. In the past, it hasn't been hard, but lately it's been more challenging to get away and do it, though.
I like catching them on opening day/night as well. I like sitting with a packed house. Hearing other's reactions to what I am watching is always fun. Of course this means running the risk of having some jackasses in the crowd or cell-phone guy (you all know who I mean) but it's usually worth it.

Also cuts down on people spoiling the plot like stevelabny said.

Somewhat unfortunately for me I have a game tonight and tomorrow night but I'm going to try and fit it in tomorrow afternoon if I get all the planning done for the night's session in time. :)

That's a good point(about the romance angle in Hellboy). But since yesterday was her birthday and that's why we're going out, it'll still be up to her.

And the downside to a packed theater is more people to yell at you for PDAs.

Some folks just hate the hassle of dealing with crowds. Like you said, you have to go early to get a good seat and snacks, which means more time sitting on your butt in a theater doing... nothing. Plus, you get more time to listen to folks talk too loudly about their personal lives on the cell phone or with their SO. Kids running around playing before the film starts. Etc.

Other folks (such as myself) really, really aren't comfortable in large crowds. I can't explain it, I just really dislike having that many people around me at a time. If I have to work or something, I'll put up with it (on the bus, at the grocery store, and so on). But for my entertainment, it's just a bit too much.

Besides, I'd rather go to an afternoon showing where the price is halved. ;)

Leaving to see it in less than 30 minutes.. I'll post a mini review if everyone wants tonight..

BTW I am a BIG Hellboy fan... so my position will be coming from my experience with the characers and how approachable it is for fans, though I will try and be even and figure out how likable it will be for the mainstream as well.

No, not just go earlier. Go earlier and stand in line (Hm, Boston forecast tonight is temps in the 30's, possible showers. Yeah, that sounds like fun!), for a show that might get sold out before I get to the window (or I could buy online, and pay the exhorbitant movie price plus a surcharge. That sounds like fun!). If I do manage to get tickets, I have to put up with it being Friday, and opening night - which means a crowd that is more excited, and has a higher portion of inebriated people, both of which yield the audience members more prone to talking and other rudeness during the film (Which sounds like so much fun!).

All this just to make sure I can take part in a discussion or two about the film (an action flick, no less - probably a fun movie, but hardly a source for deep, meaningful, and interesting discourse) on a messageboard? I hardly see that as compelling.

What, did someone take away your "Post New Thread" button? You want it done, you can do it yourself, you know...

Hmmm, I buy online for no charge. Then again, I belong to a "Movie Goers Club" or something like that with my wife, so maybe that's why. We like seeing movies. Really, the theater viewing, especially on opening night for a big movie, is an experience all it's own. For instance, we saw Return of the King on opening weekend (Friday, not Wednesday, IIRC) with five couples -- all husbands and wives, and my wife and I were the very first people in line for seats (having bought our tickets online already.) It was tons of fun. It was also the third time I'd seen the movie, of course. ;)

Hellboy is a really good comic, but alot of what makes it worthwhile is Mike Mignola's unique blocky and moody art style. I'm not sure how well this will translate onto the big screen, but the previews have all looked pretty good.
