Anyone seen Howls Moving Castle? (no spoilers)

I saw it. It is worth watching but I don't think it compares to SA. However, it was hot as a monkey's left nut in the theater so I couldn't enjoy it properly.

I have to watch it a few more times because of the discomfort (I know I whine) and because I'm rather simple and didn't get all the symbolism at first.

It is a wonderful resource to plunder ideas from for a campaign :).

It's a good movie but the main difference between it and Spirited Away is that it's set in fantasy world of sorts with its own history, culture and politics. Since there is little background or context offered I found it harder to follow the story than in Spirited Away where the main character is right out of the mundane world we all recognize. There are also some plot points that are never quite explained fully so even after having seen it I'm still confused by some of the things that occured. Unlike Sprited Away however, it seems nearly impossible to anticipate the twists the story will take. All in all its very imaginitive, colourful, visually interesting and entertaining.

While a good movie, and like other works of Miyazaki it is quite beautiful, it was not as good as Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke.

There were several significant plot holes, and a seemingly nonsensical twist at the end (hard to explain without spoilers, except that a supporting character seems to have a major plotline trimmed out and without it the end looks odd).

The IMdB reports that the director changed in production, from the producer of Digimon to Miyazaki, and it was based on an existing book (that was apparently significantly abridged to make the movie), so if there are holes it could be explained by production staff changing in mid production and adapting a book to a movie.

From a gamers standpoint, it made me think of an Eberron campaign during the Last War, with a pseudo-WWI-Europe with airships and giant armies and great wizards being forced into service as terrible weapons of war.

The book wasn't merely abridged, it was thrown out entirely after a certain point! The novel was written by Diana Wynne Jones, and there's a sequel of sorts, "Castle in the Air" (not to be confused with Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky"). The SO found Howl's Moving Castle pretty easily in the local book store, so if anyone's interested they can probably find it.

I think it's best to judge them as two separate works, rather than a book and the movie version (as in The Last Unicorn, 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc), because the plots diverge so radically within about 15 or 20 minutes of the movie.

But I liked both of them. In general, I like Miyazaki's work. I recommend the movie, and the book, but as I've said don't think of them as the same story.

P.S. As someone said, yes, the very end is kind of a deus ex, or "where'd that guy come from?" situation. There's Nothing to See Here. Move Along.

I found it very enjoyable, but [disclaimer] I'm a fan of Miyazaki's movies. I don't think it was quite as good as Spirited Away, for the reasons the posters above make.

Unlike the other posters, however, I did predict that twist in the ending - but it did feel a little rushed/forced.
