It's a pretty funny story, me and the other DM (lets call him Jimmy) switch off games. I run a Thayian campaign where I have to deal with them being evil in addition to all the PCs being powerhouses in their own right: they all are over specialized, but together they make a great team. But get this, they play their evil characters so well that they don't mind handicapping eachother for their own benefit. For example, the cleric NEEDED to hurry and rush off somewhere but the wizard (Jimmy's Character) wouldn't go until he had rememorized a spell or two, and written a bunch of scrolls. Plus the cleric knew she couldn't do what she needed to without him. Long story short, she can't get new spells without atoning, and he ends up more powerful. It works though because I come from the school of DMing that you work so your players can have fun.Why did your DM disallow it? Did you ask him about that?
Anyway Jimmy and I were pretty cool with eachother until this one time when another friend of ours (Pete) wanted to do a PVP match. It was me and 2 very inexperianced players against Jimmy and his very experianced friend and another nearly newb. Jimmy devised what he thought was a fool-proof party, but I swept the floor with him. Since then Jimmy won't let anything I do fly in his games. There have been some pretty wild rules battles too: I had to spend 30 minutes one time convincing him that you could initiate a grapple as an attack of opportunity. Last game session I almost stormed out because he had two CR 6 Worgs (7-HD advanced large magical beasts) attack our level 4 ranger. The ranger's player did nothing wrong, apparently the two beast snuck up on him without there being any cover for at least 1000ft while he was mounted and searching for suitable cover for us to hide in. Plus He said that the ranger was 400 ft away from the rest of the party (except the ranger's player never said anthing like that, and as a rule we never split the party). He later said that perhaps he errored, and the ranger is back alive (in exchange that the worgs that we killed in revenge were too)
We're setting out the differences between ourselves, but there are still some problems. Mainly I know the rules much better, and can't help but rules lawyer (but I've really been working on this). Besides, I only came up with this build just to piss Jimmy off a little (and it worked!)
As far as character concept, think FF VII Cloud. Nuff said.
edit: I realized after I posted this that I didn't answer the question directly. Jimmy said that a bastard sword in and of it's own is the heaviest thing a person can wield one handed, and that no amount of training can let you do otherwise. But actually he said no before I even got past saying "I've got this new character concept..."
