No, I mean I was genuinely surprise. Look, I knew that the live actions of movies like Aladdin were outperforming the critical response. But the Lion King looked ... so bad. It looked (to me) CATS bad. I had no idea that it was the #2 movie. None. I was truly and genuinely shocked.

Aren't you?

Nope. It's because of the kids. THEY don't see the uncanny valley animals on screen that we see. They see singing talking animals.
And whatever the quality or story, that's alot easier to sell to the parents of little kids than spiderman or SW.
Especially if those parents loved the original when they were kids.

Also? It's been out 18 days.

Ok, sure. I'm just using the #'s listed on the 2015-2019 Comparison page you referenced which shows "18 days / 2 weeks" for RoS. So on average (not counting Solo), RoS should have another 363 days of release left!
  • Force Awakens: 380 days / 54 weeks
  • Last Jedi: 382 days / 54 weeks
  • Solo: 221 days / 31 weeks
  • Rogue One: 381 days / 54 weeks

(FWIW, yesterday it cleared less than $3 million domestic; this didn't happen to TLJ until the third week's Monday box office, and it didn't happen to TFA until the fifth week's Tuesday box office.)

It's not apples to apples though. You have to look at the timing of those releases too. TLJ was released on Dec 15th, while RoS was on the 20th. TLJ had 10 days of release before Christmas Day and then a huge boost on Christmas day (as normal). ROS had 5 days.

So TLJ's 1/8/2018 Monday total was $1.7M. RoS 1/6/20 total was $2.9, almost $3M. So from a time frame standpoint (with holidays and all that now in the past), RoS made much more money on the Monday everyone went back to school than TLJ.

It's not apples to apples.

I think ultimately we'll see it near or around TLJ worldwide total when all is said and done... in 363 days or so ;)

EDIT: though you're right about China's totals. Wonder if that'll kick up at all or not.

I'll need to go see it again to do my part here in the States!

Taste truly is subjective. I watched a video last night entitled something like "10 Most Cringey Scenes from 'Cats'," and I was like, "I dunno, looks kind of fun." 🤷‍♂️

I actually really want to see Cats! On video I mean. But I've seen a few clips and it looks weirdly entertaining.

From what I have seen the BO revenue on franchise movies usually has more to do with the previous installment than the current one.

For pre-teen girls Frozen was basically Star Wars+Harry Potter+LotR+Citizen Kane all rolled into one movie. So yeah, Frozen 2 could have been 90 minutes of Sven trying to eat Olaf's nose and it would have made a gagillion dollars.

By contrast TLJ was loved by critics but had a lukewarm (pun intended) response from fans. So I am not surprised that it is financially under performing prior installments.
