I was T-Boned by a car at 40km while cycling. I rolled on the hood and then the windshield, fell on the other side of the road, did not get hit by an incoming car, got up, walked to the sidewalk and sat down fully conscious. The ambulance drivers told me they were surprised I was not dead or badly injured. I was not even wearing a helmet but had the reflex of protecting my head with my right arm.
Injuries: sensitive ribs for two months, a micro fracture to one toe, skin abrasions with impeded asphalt on the right arm and my ego. Nothing serious.
Why? because when I saw the car coming in my peripheral vision I did not freeze. Instead, I pushed on the pedals to jump in the air and fell on the hood. The bike was destroyed, not me.
I guess what I'm saying is that fast reflexes played a role in the outcome of my accident. I'm more lenient now about car impacts at low speeds in TV shows.
