D&D 5E Applying Psionic Talent Dice to other classes

I've been tempted to use the psi dice to represent a shaman's spirit guide for my cleric subclass. Currently though I'm using something similar to bardic inspiration dice instead. I still haven't decided what I want to go with but the changing size of the psi dice (or I guess spirit dice) would go well in representing the capriciousness of the spirit guide. I might change how the die size changes to be 1 (reduce a step), maximum (increase a step) instead of how the psi dice mechanic currently works. 1 would represent angering the spirit somehow so it provides less aid later where as maximum would be pleasing it so that it increases in die size.

Although it won't happen because the design team is loath to redo PHB subclasses, it would be nice to see an updated version of the old one pact released online as part of Dragon+ or something.

Agree 100%.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I'd love to see WotC release...somewhere down the road...a "1.1 Edition" that didn't change any rules, but that went back and rebalanced and cleaned up all the classes, subclasses, and feats. Maybe spells, too. Some of the original PHB stuff was fine at the time, but newer content shows they've really re-thought how some things should work.

Just call it the Star Pact like in 4e :p

The lore of it was suuuper spooky in a cosmic sense.

A hodge-podge of ideas for Paladin sub-class. "N" is the result of your Psi-Die
  • Ask somebody N questions and know whether their answers are truthful. Reduce die size.
  • Remove N forms of insanity from a willing creature. Reduce die size.
  • As a reaction to being hit by a weapon attack, add N to your AC versus that attack.
    • Or same thing for a creature you can see within 30'
  • As a bonus action, add N to the AC of a creature you can see within 30'. Lasts until the creature is hit by an attack.
  • Detect creatures with psionic powers as part of Divine Sense
  • As an action, grant N temporary hit points to yourself and a number of creatures equal to your Cha mod.

Oh man! The psionic barbarian in the OP is an awesome idea. A psionic rage halo clouding the mind of everyone around the barbarian? Yes please! What a great meat shield to send in against enemy casters.

Sure I could see a Paladin with those psionic power but I find it hard to wrap it up properly into an Oath, or even a Cleric's domain (Logic Domain? Mind Domain?). Feels more like a Paladin who picked up Wild Talents.

I guess a Ranger or Druid who is specializing in hunting Lovecraftian invaders from the Far Realms to the Natural Plane could make use of Psionic powers to fight fire with fire but I'm not sure how that would translate mechanically... Circle of the Gate?

Paladin of Truth.
Strives to act logically, without letting emotion cloud their judgement.
Promotes clear-headedness and thoughtfulness in others.
Opposes those that lie, try to play on or cause emotions or confusion in others to benefit themselves.
Actively fights creatures that induce or like to create insanity.

Aura has Calm Emotions effect.
Psi-die to saves against emotion, confusion, or insanity effects.
Bonus ti Intelligence and some Wisdom ability checks?

Can't see a psionic druid really. Maybe focused on crystals?
Of a kind of "forest mind" that can link all the living creatures in an area into a gestalt entity?

Oooh... Truth could also work as a domain for Clerics.

Thanks! That's what I thought too, maybe give them a movement option so they slip by the front line and mess with the back? And if the Rage compels you to attack in melee, it also messes up those with long ranged attacks and flyers who would rather not stay where they are. It's gonna be punishing on the Barbarian but that Dragon isn't flying off to breath on his allies (hence the need for some temp HP feature). I could also see their mere presence making concentration check harder at later level.
