Arcana Unearthed - Unearthed Arcana?

Hmmm... hunted through pages of monte's boards, and found the thread I was thinking of I think. Monte never commented, other people said that theythought he knew, so I take it abck.

Still not a surprise to me that they were putting out the book tho.

They have similar names, but the concept behind them is completely different. What is interesting is that both products, while being fundamentally different, have striking similarities to the original book.

AU is similar to the original because it introduces new classes and a new magic system. It provides an alternative that is designed for the player (sort of). UA is similar to the original because it will present a host of alternate rules - something the original did as well.

Nope, UA used to be Unearthed Arcana, but Unknown Armies staged a coup and claimed the acronym.
And then there's Urban Arcana as well. I say we put all the books in an arena and let them battle it out.

Y'know, I was going to hold off on buying 3.5 stuff, but I think I'll buy UA (unearthed arcana) just so I can use the acronym and irritate the folks on RPGnet. :D

i went to the seminar on the new releases.

UA for 3.5 is going to be OGC at least according to Ted Stark.

Andy Collins said it is a bunch of optional/variant rules devised by everyone they could ask at WotC.

I know Arcana Unearthed is Monte Cook's new alternate PHB, but what is UA? For that matter, couldn't Wizards come up with their own name?

What gives?

Would it not be more fair to ask if Monte could not have come up with HIS own name? Unearthed Arcana was a DnD product from years and years ago. It was Monte who decided to infringe on the name not WOTC.
