Arcane Power Excerpt: Vestige Pact

Is it just me, or does some of this seem a bit Leader-y.
I'm speaking of course of the King Elidyr augment on Eyes of the Vestige. You let an ally make a saving throw?

A secondary leader role would be interesting to see.

I'm thinking maybe a dwarven warlock MC'd cleric, who channels the powers of the divine heroes of his clan. Refluff all the Vestiges to different heroes, that'd work out awesomely.

It goes on to say you choose your active vestige after a short or extended rest, so I'm pretty certain your interpretation is not correct. Learning the daily expands your list of vestages you can choose after your rest, it's not nessicary to cast it.
It says: "You select one of these as your active vestige after a short rest or an extended rest."

And then it lists King Elidyr and Zutwa as options. I'm pretty sure that option is in there to allow you to switch back to a proper pact boon after expending a daily power if you don't want to keep your daily pact boon (which makes sense, considering pact boons like the Ugar pact.

The mechanics looks neat, I like their emphasis on "dailies last an entire encounter" - because that's how that should be (as most players tend to select lasting dailies anyway, if given the choice).

Flavour-wise... hard to say. Vestiges were great before, but the vestiges here are a bit bland, whereas the old vestiges had some inspiration from the Goetia. I can see why they probably dial down these real-world inspired vestiges... but these gave whole vestige thing an unique flavour. Hopefully, they will at least keep the D&D name drops (Acerak, Karsus and so on).

Cheers, LT.

Well, a number of the D&D figures who were vestiges in 3E have been described as being alive (or at least still undead) in 4E. This would include Acererak (discussed in-depth in Open Grave) and Geryon (mentioned in passing in Manual of the Planes.)

So they can't necessarily keep all the same "name-drops." I do agree with you, however, that keeping some--or coming up with new ones based on other previous characters--would be interesting. :)

However, the trick is to make sure you don't pick someone who has more story potential as an active force than as a vestige. For instance, I think having Acererak and Geryon not vestiges is a good thing, because you can do more with 'em that way.

KIng Elidyr is the guy who "lost" Nerath after his mano-mano battle with Yeenoghu during the Battle of the Nine Sons. He was propulsed into the Abyss and no one has heard from him since. I guess now some people have ;)

I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised how nicely the stuff being released right now fits into my campaign setting, from PHB2 to this. Lots of fun stuff to add.

As for the fluff, I am middle-ground. Not something I need (homebrew campaign and all will make up new stuff), but as long as doesn't eat up to much space tis fine with me.

I can definiately see this getting lots of updates with new Vestiges. Since well it is something that would come naturally in making new Powers for the Warlock.

It looks like the primary vestiges, King Elidyr and Zutwa, don't have an associated pact boon, so you have to use a daily before your pact boon comes into play. I guess the at-will augments are supposed to balance that.

Am I reading that right?

I think they just didn't include them in the article, but Icould be wrong.

Personally, I think that the vestiges will get relatively more fluff than the stars mentioned in the Star Pact powers...which says to me an expansion article in Dragon should be a priority in the near future.
