Arcane spell failure outmoded ?

Note the area I put in bold face. Add still spell.

I simply assumed the original post was wry and ironic...

It made me laugh... Unfortunately you usually have to use smileys or sarcasm tags or else someone will think you're serious...

I like arcane spell failure also, but I justify it to my players as the wizard's need to draw energy from the surroundings and channel it through her nervous system before expelling it to whatever use the wizard has for it. This means armor would 'block' magical energies from channeling into the wizard, and the more armor the more the magic is interrupted from being channeled, hence the higher chance of failure. It also explains the feats of Still Spell and Silent Spell a lot better, IMO, and keeps the arcane spells as more of a mystique thing than divine spells.

Forgot to explain, Still spell becomes a way to summon around the armor IMC.

Also, it helps explain how sorcerers can just 'do it' while wizards have to learn how to build up the energy through correct summoning techniques (hence the hand waving & chanting).

I was not sure and could not come up with a good way of being sarcastic back. So, since I was at work a just posted a little tongue in check. :)

After the fact I realized I should have used the SRD text verbatim minus the feat name. Using the smilies makes it too easy.

:D

A 3rd level mage is not going to have 72000 gp to get bracers +8, nor the spells to avoid having to use a crossbow. And even if you're AC 20 with full plate, you have 3d4 hit points (+ Con). If you want to hold off the orcs single-handed with your 5 magic missiles per day, go right ahead.

Crossbow? Why would I use a crossbow when Magic Missile Wands are 750g a pop?

The point was I would never have to drop the cash for the Bracers +8. In most situations the physical armor would be better (exception Incorporeal - while the anti-magic field situation favors physical armor).

BTW I'd be opposed to removing ASF. Let the cow live, kill the sacred pigs instead. Bacon for everyone!

Have fun killing things at the rate of 1d4+1 hit points a pop. Not to mention that a 3rd level wizard who can afford to plonk down 750 gp at regular intervals is rather exceptional, to say the least.

Base 10
Bracers armour +8
Shield +7
Haste +4
Dex +4 (easily gettable with cat's grace)
---------------
Total AC 33

At high levels, you can already get super AC without bothering with physical armour. At _low_ levels, their d4 hit points make wizards horribly fragile. Therefore I have no problems letting them wear armour if they want.

Hong and I are apparently on the same wave length.
What is the justification for a cleric's bulls strength being able to be cast with no problems in the medievel equivilent of a tank, while an arcanist exact same spell will suffer from impediement.

Do people really think that arcanist spell list are soo much better than the divine spell list, that poor old wizards and sorcerers must be curtailed else they will truly make those poor old weak clerics with their bonus domains and often very nifty domain spells feel weak and inferior?
