Arcane Trickster: whats the best class/race combo?

I was originally going to go with Halfling Rogue/Wizard, but now the idea of a Gnome Illusionist/Rogue has been sprung.

Does this work, can I reach all the requirements being an Illusionist instead of a Wizard?

Well, you could hose yourself if you picked an opposition school(s) that didn't let you cast mage hand or fulfill any of the other prerequisites for Arcane Trickster but other than that, illusionists are wizards so of course you can qualify as an illusionist. (Specialist wizards are IMNSHO usually better than generalists for any purpose because you can get around a school restriction (as long as you aren't foolish enough to pick Transmutation or Abjuration as opposed schools) and the extra spell at each level is a real boost to your casting ability.)

The gnome would be cool but I'd cast my vote for halfling or goblin as the best race for arcane trickster. We have a halfling (specialist Transmuter, prohibited Evocation) that made it in one of my games and he rocks.

This is not the best route, but I have a player who is a Tiefling Sorceror/Rogue who is going for the PRC. He's filling the party rogue slot, not the party caster slot.

You'll want 1 level of loremaster in order to get the last bit of the skill requirements, not rogue. That way you can still get 9th level spells.
