Arcane Trickster's Sneak Attack

I believe that cosmopolitan says you can't use it on an exclusive skill...decipher script is bard/rogue only, which makes it an exclusive skill, so you can't take cosmopolitan with it.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

And if you don't use FR and don't have access to cosmopolitan you can go rogue/wizard/loremaster/arcane trickster 3/5/1/1.

decifer script is a class skill for loremaster, to be a lore master all you need is a bunch of div spells one of which must be 3rd level 10 ranks in knowledge skills x2, and skill focus knowledge something or other. While not faster than rogue 4/wizard 5 it gives you casting power eventually allowing access to 9th level spells assuming 20th level is the cap in your game.

You are correct. Cosmopolitan only work on non-exclusive skills. DS is Bard and Rogue only.

To do what you suggest, you'd need...

  • Knowledge Skill - 10 ranks (for Loremaster)
  • Knowledge Skill - 10 ranks (for LM)
  • 3 Metamagic or item creation feats (for LM)
  • Cast 7 different Divinations 3rd level or higher (for LM)
  • Decipher Script - 7 ranks (for AT)
  • Disable Device - 7 ranks (for AT)
  • Escape Artist - 7 ranks (for AT)
  • Knowledge (arcana) - 4 ranks (for AT, but could be one of the above 10 rank knowledges)
  • +2d6 Sneak Attack (for AT)
  • Cast Mage Hand and 3rd level spells (for AT)

Considering that Knowledge skills are cross-class for Rogues, and Wizards get only a very few precious skill points... I think you'd have a hard time accomplishing this.

Or, you'd have very few left-over skill points to burn on skills you want. Plus, you wouldn't have any choice in your feats.

A pretty high price for one extra spell-caster level.

Likewise you could take a level in Shadowdancer, which has Decipher Script as a class skill. You'd only need Move Silently 8, Hide 10, Perform 5, and Dodge, Mobility and Combat Reflexes. You wouldn't get a spellcaster level, but you would get "Hide in Plain Sight"

I don't play Forgotten Realms, but from your descriptions, it seems that a Bard 7 can take this, only having to use Cosmopolitan for Disable Device (which is not exclusive).

There is no need to take cosmopolitan or anything. First level take rogue to maximise skill points, take the next five level in wizard, then take 2 more level of rogues and put lot of points in decifer script, disable devise and escape artist. The max skill rank is dependant on your total character level.

Although the requirements are steep, I think the arcane trickster is severely overpowered. You get 2 good saves, full sneak attack (ie, one d6 every 2 levels) AND good casting! The arcane caster makes the assassin look very weak.

Ancalagon.

Max rank in exclusive skills is not based on total character level.

Correct, that trick will work for the other skills, but not Decipher Script.

I was working it up for my Halfling Rogue/Wizard (with a 16 Intelligence), and at 10th level, he can be a Rogue 3/Wizard 5/Shadowdancer 1/Arcane Trickster 1. If he takes all 10 levels of Arcane Trickster, he'll still have one level left over to play with.

He'll have a modest amount (between 1 and 5 per level) of spare skill points to spend on non-requirement skills, and one spare feat that can be spent on a non-requirement feat.
