D&D 5E (2014) Archetypes/Traditions/Domains, that are tiered?

In the Dragonlance 3.x rule books, they had tiered prestige classes for the Solamnic Knights, knight of the crown, sword, and rose respectively. And there was a slight tieredness to the way they did magic users too.

Now, I think that for Conclave wizards in Dragonlance using the Conclave as a Faction would be a good idea, but I don't think that using the Solamnic Knights that way would work.

So my question is has anyone created tiered Archetypes or Traditions, in which you can choose to switch from your Archetype after some levels to a different Archetype that builds on the previous one in a slightly different, but not necessarily better, way.

I guess an example would be if you were a fighter and you took the Champion Archetype, but for the 10th level bump you get to choose to continue with Champion, or to go a slightly different way into a different but complementary archetype. Tiered Archetypes could provide a simple way to have more options with less overall work by the DM.

Any thoughts on how this might work? Just curious.

I wouldn't mind further branching class progression paths but I think it's a level of complexity that would largely go unused.
 

I think for the Solamnics, having Crown/Sword be a choice on Subclass/Archetype would work, and then have Rose be a feat requiring a certain Faction reputation level to take.

Fiction-wise, it didn't seem like characters switched later - it was either when they qualified for the new position, or they stayed and rose in rank for their current group.
