Kennon has addressed the issue of attendance in the Table Rules pretty clearly... if we schedule a game, we need 50% of the players or 4 people - which ever is smaller. I also believe that you reserve there right to include (or exclude) yourself in the 50% if you so desire...
Right - pretty much you shoouldn't need to "set aside" time to play my game more than every two weeks (you don't even have to do that), and someone else can run something else (or we can just hang out, or whatever) on the other times.

Well I wasn't thinking so much on the issue of attendance, since my weekends are def. more flex. during the summer... I guess I was wondering what people's expectations are so I could "pencil in" x times a month for this. I also was wondering if we were all thinking the same thing...since it seems likely we'll have to split up into 2 groups at some pt.

:) X=2, as far as I know. :)

I think splitting up will entirely depend on attendance. Even at 7 players, we'd be able to have just one game, I think. But - that's just what I think and what Kennon thinks is really the important thing.

You're right in that Kennon may have to make the final "call" but I think our opinons on this matter too. For the record, I think 7 is too big. 5 or 6 is max for me (except for a rare big battle session) and 3-4 is ideal.

We've played with more... and, while I like a smaller group - I generally like to minimize the number of gaming sessions (for the sake of our apartment. I'd definately prefer cleaning up after two large gaming sessions/month than 4 smallish ones).

Though, I think it will work itself out - we've all got pretty busy schedules. Don't think the large group will become a problem (at least, not right now). Generally, I'd expect that 6 people would be at a "normal" session and that's a pretty good number.

Can I just second this. Not that I have much experience to go from, as I am used to only large groups, but I can see the draw for a slightly smaller group. I know more groups also means more for the DM.....

If it helps or would change things, there is a condo close to the Baumans that can be available for games if the DM wishes it and the player that lives there is playing :) Just putting it out there, and DM can ignore :P

As Kennon can attest, we played for several years with 8-12 players back in our golden days of d6 Star Wars. Personally, I prefer the smaller size as well. Some of the best game sessions I've ever been a part of have been 4 players or so. Hopefully we won't have to worry about that with this crew.

If, however, things do get too unwieldy, you all will be welcome to join us for game sessions in our apartment this coming year. There's no reason any one household should have to deal with 4 messes a month! :D

The issue is not purely one of wear and tear on the Bauman Abode (in fact, from my perspective, it's generally balanced from a gaming perspective by having my material close by), though I do appreciate the offer of other locations should it become necessary.

While at the best of times (for gaming) I had enough time to pull together a game for 2 groups every week, I was also not employed and had no wife (or even a girlfriend) when I did so, as Chris and Clarissa can probably attest. ;)

Which is just a long way of saying the best of times (for gaming) ain't now.

I believe that people's schedules will naturally pare down the playing group to a more manageable 6 (or fewer) people at any given session, rather than the full 8 - an 8 which may only last until August, anyway, because our good friend (and potentially burgeoning gamer) Nico will only be a regular DC resident for the summer, and Chris will be arriving in the greater metropolitan area at approximately the same time she leaves (keeping our maximum gamer supply at 7).

7 is, as we've noted, close to a bit much. HOWEVER, people's social commitments being what they are, we're not likely to see a full group all that often, anyway. If by some miracle of science or alchemy we're getting all 7 potential characters to every session (or even a rough plurality of the sessions), I will consider - maybe - running two groups. I can't say with any certainty, but based on my current time commitments, etc. that running two groups would probably decrease the overall frequency at which I could run each game, as well - rather than running 4 sessions, I'd probably just run each group on one of the 2 sessions - meaning everyone gets to play about 1x a month.

All that being said, I really don't think it will be an isssue - especially if the large(r) group is conscientious and attentive, even if we all show up at once. If we hit our above stated maximums, I would ask that we all give it a whirl at least a couple of times before I start writing twice the story for half the people. ;)

Does that help clarify what I'm thinking is reasonable?

As an ancillary note, I think we should shoot for the weekend of June 10 for session 2 of "Behind the Veil."
