Are Avalanche Press products good?

Personally, I don't mind the covers at all...but, given the subjects, the page counts are WAY too low to give it justice thus I havent touched any of 'em.

Hmm...not true at all in my experience. The products I mentioned gave a nice, reasonably complete overview of the topics you'd expect.

They are done well, and are interesting to read.

I bought Jade and Steel when I went through my Rokugan phase. I found it to be of pretty limited use, though the historical information made for an interesting, if not too in-depth read.

The only other product I've looked at it their horse book. I found it rather amusing that they had a sidebar concerning how the concept of a riding dog is stupid and gave several reasons why, such as a dog's stamina and the way thery are anatomicaly designed, on a page that discussed griffons and pegasi as mounts.

The cover thing isn't really an issue; you get more gratuitous cheesecake in a Mongoose book than from Avalanche. I won't buy any more of Avalanche's stuff after they made a hissy fit about no longer giving review copies to people who give thier material negative reviews. Seemed pretty damn childish to me.

While I did look at some of their stuff, none of it caught my eye. weren't they one of the game companys that got all in a tither about reviews of their products? i believe it was avalanche and that company that has the 900 words colume on their website. i think that is pretty telling myself.

That information is incorrect. The "900 Words" column you are talking about is from the Fast Forward Entertainment site.

They were however the company that refused to give out review copies if they could notbe guaranteed a positive review.

I'll say again though: Avalanche makes some fantastic products, and if you refue to buy them because of the covers, the only "point" you are making is that you are willing to deprove yourself of great product for the sake of political correctness.

I have good to excellent experiences with the Avalanche books. The content is quite good (not 'top-notch' as in Book of the Righteous 5-star material, but QUITE good and solid) and useable as well as being a generally good read if you aren't a history buff for the era in question.

Also, I am a fan of the old-school Heavy Metal adult fantasy magazines (circa late 70's to mid-80's) and was quite happy to see Avalanche hiring Heavy Metal cover artists to do their covers. Sure, they have scantilly clad women on the covers of MANY (not all!) of their sourcebooks, which seems to put people off, but then again, I caught flack for having NON-SCANTILY clad women on the cover of a book we published from the same audience who seem to just not want to see women on the cover of a book. (which is a shame, if you ask me.)
