Are Avalanche Press products good?

This may be the "married to an art director" part of me talking, but the way I see it, covers and interior art are part of the product. If they bother you, then the product does less for you, and can't be construed as "great" (at least not objectively). There's nothing wrong with reacting that way; that's why we have art in RPG books at all, in order to enhance a reader's overall enjoyment of the book in question.
If art had *any* influence on whether or not I buy an RPG book, my d20 library would be barely a quarter of the size it is now...

It has never ceased to amaze me how male roleplayers can go on ad infinitum about realism in their games right down to the exact amount of damage obtained from some obscure weapon that only three archaeologists have ever heard of, but never seem to have a problem with the entirely unrealistic concept of string bikini chainmail. :)

{shrill}I'm incensed! How dare you imply that all male gamers are the same? We're not just collections of biological switches, we have thoughts and feelings! This is sexism!

Plus that statement is categorically untrue, as I have met a person who didn't fit that archetype at all!

I'll say again though: Avalanche makes some fantastic products, and if you refue to buy them because of the covers, the only "point" you are making is that you are willing to deprove yourself of great product for the sake of political correctness.

Main Entry: po·li·ti·cal cor·rect·ness
Function: noun
1 anything that I don't agree with
2 any statement that I don't have a coherent argument against

I've got a couple of their books, but I haven't been that impressed. They're okay -- there are some decent ideas & info in 'em -- but I think GURPS historicals are better, and the d20 rules material is, well, kind of eh.

(And the rant in the book on steeds, about riding dogs being so unrealistic -- the rant that comes just before the pages on flying horses -- makes me laugh and shake my head at the same time.)

OTOH, the FLGS had some Avalanche books on sale; next time I go in, I might just pick one up, if they're still there. Give 'em another try.

Ahh, the rallying cry of the politcally correct. I was wondering when it would appear:)

Congrats Kenji :)

I'll answer this the way I always need to answer it:

Re: "Anything I don't agree with"

There is no shortage of stuff in the world with which I don't agree... most of it does not stoop to hiding behind the skirts of political correctness insead of arguing points.

Re: "any statement I don't have a coherent argument against"

Here is what I thought was the failry obvious argument.

What I don't "agree" with in this particular subject has much to do with that age old proverb about Judging a Book by it's Cover. In much the same way I would not judge a person by the color of their skin, judge a personality by a person's weight or judge a car by it's paint job, I wouldn't judge a game supplement solely by it's cover.

Following that basic concept, I bristle at vapid, prudish self-censorship alomg the lines of "I won't even consider looking at that product becasue of the cover".

That is what I was referring to when I said....

Avalanche makes some fantastic products, and if you refue to buy them because of the covers, the only "point" you are making is that you are willing to deprove yourself of great product for the sake of political correctness.

Need any further clarifications? Or are you planning on trotting out another bumper sticker slogan?

If the topics have any use for you, pay special attention to Blood Prince of Wallachia and Black Flags.

They both really shine.

Put me on the side of the pictures don't bother me and I find their products to be good but not great. As it has been stated before (and thus repeated by me :) ) their products cover areas that other publishers have not so I do find them useful.

Though The Last Days of Constantinople wasn't the best module written, as someone who likes Roman and Byzantine history, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

My group played through "The Last Days of Constantinople" and absolutely loved it. In fact, in our 4+ year campaign, that adventure/mission is probably one of the top five most loved and best remembered. The halfling rogue still runs around saying, "For the Pope!" once in a while. One caveat: the d20 statistics are horrid; plan on using this one (if you use it) as you would use a module from another game system, that is, just for plot, maps, background, characters, etc. - not for statistics.

Unfortunately, I have found the subsequent AP titles much less useful, mainly because the ones I have looked at emphasize source material to the exclusion of adventure material.

And I love the covers.

All Canadians with "Help Me" written on their foreheads say that. Categorically even. :D

And come to think of it, that Flying Polyp and Great Race of Yith drawing on page 167 of d20 Call of Cthulhu could use a fig leaf or two...
