Are there any *classic* 2E adventures?

Agree with qstor: FRQ1 Haunted Halls of Eveningstar is a superb module that combines the compact reusability of the 1E classics with the more setting-heavy style.

I think most of the really good adventures are world-specific, otherwise it's hard to develop consistency and a solid sense of place. The really great 1E modules are firmly tied to the World of Greyhawk (excepting I3-5 and Dragonlance, which is another case) -- and some of the apparently settingless 2E modules weren't really (I'm thinking Night Below).

I thought the adventures that went with Al-Quadim, or at least Assasin's Mountain and the Sea Voyage one, where truly wonderful.

They left the PCs in charge and they honestly felt like tales from the Arabian Nights.

It has to be Al-Qadim and Ravenloft for me. Castles Forlorn was amazing. Assassin Mountain and Cities of Bone were also great. These really nailed the gothic horror and arabian nights feel.

I'll second The Great Modron March and third Dead Gods. Both are Monte Cook's work, BTW.

Great Modron March was in part Colin McComb's, actually.

And for that matter, not the best planescape adventure collection. It woefully misunderstands PC motivation. The first few adventures are spent showing the PCs what a menace the modrons are, and later on the adventures expect the PCs to be sympathetic towards them.

If you wanted to pick a second classic PS adventure by Monte, I'd say it would be Tales of the Infinite Staircase, which are a masterpiece of coordinated adventures. Each adventure is separate, but the PCs have an overall goal and the adventure can be run in any order to deal with the threat.

Classic 2e?

Return to Tomb of Horrors
Shattered Circle
Dead Gods
Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff (the new stuff, not the classic reprint part).
Die Vecna Die
Apocalypse Stone

and...

THE TERRIBE TROUBLE AT TRAGIDORE (Hasn't everyone played this?)

I would say that the module "Into the Fire" from Dungeon Magazine #1 should qualify as a 2E classic, especially since it spawned two sequels.

Return to the Tomb of Horror
The Death of Rudolph van Richten (Ravenloft)
A Paladine in Hell
Castles Forlorn (Ravenloft)

Beyond these four, I can't think of any other game mods which can be described as 'classic'. (Heck, I can't even then of any which could be called especially good.)

Yeah, 2E had a spate of adventures that were strongly tied to events going on in TSR novels. I never liked these adventures. They made the PCs seem insignificant.

In fact, it's still happening now in 3E with City of the Spider Queen.

It was worse than insignificant, the module would tell the GM to impress upon the players that their characters were at an historic event and should fawn over the might and majesty of the characters ffrom the novels as they did their novel thing. My wife stopped running that god thing and we just ignored stuff from the company until 3e. We had plenty of fun in FR with what we had up until that time.
