Are there too few known encounter powers?

The idea is that per-encounters (and dailies) are things you save up for when they're most advantageous to use. If you could use them every round, it would defeat the purpose.

Purpose? Is that in the MM?

Its not a huge thing, but I kind of wish they kept more of Bo9S, and let you know many at-will/encounter powers, but only let you prep a few at a time. They only did that for wizard dailies...

Then again, I think the Crusader mechanics are sweet.

I don't think it will be a problem at all. The At Will abilities are useful beyond basic damage. Remember, this is NOT 3e.

Rangers have a "Shift and Shoot" ability which will be useful at any level.

Ray of Frost causes slow and can lock down a brute.

There are always minions to kill at every level. Since they require a "Hit" to kill you can't count on "damage shield" abilities. There's no sense wasting an encounter power on a minion.

This is not 3e. Characters have more interesting things to do than swing their sword or shoot their Bow for 1D8 for the rest of their careers.

If 4e follows the same pattern as 3e, then powers will grow in number as more books are released. The Combat book comes out in October.
I think you're answering the wrong question here.

The OP is concerned that the hard limit of encounter powers (4) is too low. Not that there's too few to choose from.

Exactly.

This.

And to what purpose am I defeating?! A red one or green one? A nice one or mean one? Ah but to have a purpose is a wonderful thing, sort of like a role. ;)

I acquiesce to the wisdom of Hong.

What was magical about capping it at 4?

Oh, the numbers from Lost are starting to appear in 4th edition!

Now should we search for the 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42? :)

(feel free to ignore this bad joke)
