Are Undead Scary?

How scary are undead?

The undead make me happy, in a horrible sort of way. And they still scare my players, although that has more to do with how I run them (and how one group is all fighters and rogues - no cleric) than with their actual stats.

Oh, and BG, what is that from?

Demiurge out.

*Ahem*

As supporter of the Campaign For Equal Rites, I politely suggest that the crude term "undead" be abandoned in favor of the more politically correct "differently alive". The Silent Majority of the vitally challenged can't tolerate these slurs any more.

You spelled rights wrong. (Simon the Sorcerer anyone?)

In game, the undead make me uncomfortable. They can be beat with proper knowledge.

However, an undead creature in real life? I would totally and utterly freak out.

Yeah... when I was freaked out with them... those games were 2e. Wights especially I think freaked me out.

Yeah. I sicked 8 wraiths on a level 10 party with 7 tlevel turning capacity. They ahd a heck of a time turning, but the low fort asve for the energy drain seemed kind of lame.

Undead lost a lot of their sting when level draining was weakened. They went from being the monsters you DID NOT want to cross, to being something that was as easy to tackle as any other creature. I've seen the change first hand, and the only time level-draining undead were considered threats was when one character was in danger of losing ALL his levels to a pack of them.

Even as a 2E Playa Killa DM i did feel level loss was a touch unfun for players. It made enough sence, but was almost too heavy handed. Even 3E's "we attack your stats" feels a touch over the top. I prefer enervation like effects [longer durations that never cost actual levels] & inflict wounds damage + status affects.
