Based upon my answer in Crothian's poll, I have to answer as better than average. I think I do well, I tend to lead the tactical planning for my group (when they actually allow time to plan). I won't go so far as to say I'm top 10 because I am pretty untested at high level stuff, when things can get very complicated. Most of the games I have been in die before we get characters to double digit levels.

I have some experience with both very-high level stuff and very-low level stuff, but I don't think my GMs have been especially creative with battles and I think I have a lot to learn and could try to be more creative.

I got game, though.

I place myself solidly average. I used to play miniature wargames and that gave me some sense, but realistically I concentrate far more on my roleplaying than my skirmishing, as that is what attracted me to the game in the first place.

Heck, I took up rpgs to get away from all the tactical considerations!

I put myself at Pretty Bad. Lately I've been trying to bone up with articles at Wizards. Just got in the Power Gamer's 3.5 Warrior Strategy Guide, too. I'm hoping D&D for Dummies will help as well.

Below average.

I do, however, read a heck of a lot. I have a hard time innovating a particular tactic, but I have a very good idea what can be used and how.

I voted myself as average.

I mostly DM, so my tactics are generally running the monsters/NPCs vs. the party. I've definitely given them a serious run for the money at times, but I try not to get too overboard there. Just watch out if I run a dragon, as I usually handle those quite well!

I also try to the play the monsters based on their intelligence. A bunch of 6 INT monsters aren't going to have nearly as good of a strategy or tactics as a 16 INT creature. Thus, my packs of humanoids don't always have great tactics, but enemy NPCs are another story.

I'd say I'm much better at setting up challenging encounters (strategy) vs. actually running the encounter (tactics) as well. In the heat of battle, I'll sometimes overlook options or fail to focus on the best target, and after the fact I'll realize, "Doh! I could have really hosed them if I had done it that way instead."

I can't hedge my answer on this one. I'm usually one of the main reasons the group as a whole survives a tough tactical fight.

I also do a lot of tactical wargaming begining with my dad teaching me chess before I even started school. :heh:
