C'mon, fess up.

Would your mother be asamed at the way you give out treasure and items with reckless abandon?

Do you find yourself "pushing" your players in modules so they can actually discover those incredibly well-hidden magic items (ahem... swallowed ring of wizardry... ahem...)

Do you have trouble sleeping at night, wondering if maybe you shouldn't have given those 1st level characters a magic item to start the adventure with?
Nope, not unless I think they have earned them. Or found them in hidden locations.

Guilty I'm afraid... :(

My players are the heroes in my story and I want to see them win. I'm not especially generous with magic items (I use the random charts) but in the event they are faced with a really dangeous encounter I'll usually let them role-play their way out of being killed. IE: In 2E the number appearing for Orcs could number into the hundreds. My players when they were roughly 3rd level came across a warband with 80-so-odd orcs in it. They obviously couldn't win. Even though it was just a random encounter I had the Orc chieftan parlay with the party and came up with the idea that they were actually tracking down a group of Gnolls who had raided their encampment while the men were out raiding a human settlement. As the party had a Ranger with them the Orc chieftan asked for the party's help in tracking down the Gnolls as several of their children had been taken. The party didn't have a choice really but in the end it kept them from being killed by the orcs.

I once gave a first level party a wand of charm monster. Of course it only had 1 charge left and half the party started out the campaign charmed. It could have had 3 charges but when the big battle between both halves of the players started, 2 of the players made the will save I granted them because attacking people wasn't quite in their nature...

Imagine my glee and the party's chagrin when the second level cleric of wee-jas used it to calm down a spooked horse that probably would have been calmed down by the ranger with an apple.

That reminds me of a situation way back in the day. I was playing a 2E Ranger and as we were travelling across the plains we discovered that our encampment was being encircled by a pride of lions out on the hunt. I tried to do my Crocodile Dundee voodoo trick but failed. The DM described what happened to my PC as akin to the scene in Jurassic Park where a bunch of Velociraptors all pounce on some guy.

Good times... good times.

There was one PC in my world that was a Half Elf, Fighter/Cleric. He had burlap pants and a straw hat as his only equipment until he reached 3/3 level. It was one of that player's favorite characters (Tied for first) to date.

I do, on occasion, have epic adventures in which the PCs are the heroes. In those cases, they do see some magic items.

You can't fool me.

Those were "Mordakin's Burlap Pants of Destruction":

Damage Resistance
Spell Resistance
Strength +6
Dex +12

17 times/day user may cast any 9th level Arcane spell as a spell-like ability

Imbues perfect flight on the wearer

Permanent protection from evil.

Yeah... I bet that was "Salakin's Straw Helm" too... I just can't prove it.

I guess I am not a loose as some but I would not say I am tight either, just just regular but I am dirty so when I give it up it something bad happens.
