D&D (2024) Are you going to buy the new 2024 D&D Core Books

Do you plan on getting the new D&D core books in 2024?

I think for me, it depends on what is new.

I have zero interest in paying WOTC $100+ for milquetoast errata to fix the design flaws that should have been identified in 2014.

What would swing my "no" to a "yes" is:
  • actually interesting monsters
  • major spell rebalance
  • DM support (for example, I want Chase rules that are actually fun and engaging to run)
  • new things that are interesting and cool. They keep talking about a "Bastion" subsystem. That's cool and new! Assuming it's good, it could get me excited
I was disappointed from the outset that the new edition was "5e, again", but if I see some intentional improvements, I could get on board. Right now, I'm not on board. It just doesn't seem enough of a change to warrant my money.

I voted for maybe, but the relevant factor for me is not so much reviews, but what else we see in the playtest. There’s still three packets to go on the PHB, and an unknown number to go on the other two core books. I think anyone making up their mind about it now is jumping the gun.
This. I'm still in the "maybe" camp, but I couldn't care less about the reviews. I'm still waiting to see how the rest of the playtest shakes out before I make up my mind. But that wasn't an option in the poll, so I didn't answer.

I seem to be like some others in that I will likely buy the PHB and see if the others are worth it. The DMG might have some better uses other than just magic items and the MM is something I have not opened in quite a while. I find that I have most of the monsters in a Word doc that I use and expand on from online sources. If I need to add a monster I can find it online to add to the doc.

I find the art is not a big draw for me.

This is always subject to change as we get closer to release but right now? No. I just made a character for a high level game and my books didn't have to leave their place in storage. Ditto for the last game I'm in that's just wrapping up. With the costs being what they are saying now, I can't justify it. It will be the first edition of the game that I don't own.

It will be interesting to see what my group does about the VTT next year, or if they will want to move to Valiant or Level Up.

Absolutely. I also refuse to buy tacos from Wendy’s.

Also what subscriptions? DDB? Not even needed to use the service. At all.

Like deny a company your patronage when they don’t behave how you want, absolutely, but this comes across as more than a little…ill-informed on what wotc are even putting out.

So, you really don't think WoTC will be offering a subscription service to their VTT, and charging for various in-VTT items?

I think it's pretty clear that that is the direction they're are heading in.
