Are you off today?

No work for me! Went to the FLGS and played some Warmachine today. Although this inventor dude I've been dealing with at work keeps calling me even though I told him I had the day off.

I definitely worked today and will do so tomorrow as well. As a high school band director, my symphonic band was booked to play the city's big Veteran' Day observance (note that there are 4 high schools in the city area and I do all of the city functions, even though I am technically not the "city" school... I don't really mind - it says something that I am always the one whose bands are always asked to perform at important events). Tomorrow, the marching band is participating in the local Veterans' Day parade (this one has 4 high school bands, though not the same four).

I had election day off, and I get next Monday off. My company works or doesn't according to the local GM Assembly Plant schedule. For some stupid reason GM doesn't like losing 2 days worth of production in one week, they still lose two days of production for the month in addition to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

He he. I work for GM too. Every November, we get election day, and then we get a day that they always call Veteran's Day, but it is NEVER scheduled for the same day that everyone else calls Veteran's Day. Instead, it's always scheduled for the first day of hunting season in Michigan. They figure, since so many people will call in sick that day anyway, it's easier to make it a holiday.

I worked. I work in customer service, so I get very few days off (July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years); what a short list.

I was stunned to discover that today was not a holiday at my workplace. I work for the University of Toronto, which puts on its own Remembrance Day ceremony; yet, despite this, it still requires its employees to work through the day. I find this kind of disgraceful. How can we award a day off for Canadian Thanksgiving, a holiday of complete made-up nonsense, and not celebrate a holiday honouring real people and important events!?

I went to the ceremony and then had to attend a technically optional yet practically mandatory presentation.

Kinda sad, that. I'm fairly certain that Memorial University here in St. John's was closed, what with it being a war memorial and all.

Of course July 1 is still Memorial Day here, remembering the WWI dead on the occasion of the anniversary of the first day of the Somme offensive. Hard to sync that up with Canada Day. Sad-Happy-Sad-Happy :\ ...Mmmmmm beer.

I have no more PTO, having used it all previously for reason associated with the baby and with hurricane damage to our house.

I did indeed have Veteran's Day off, though to be honest, it fell on my normal day off.

However, my ex and my daughter had the day off, too. So, we went and saw Zathura which my daughter thoroughly enjoyed. As a family group, we also got to have lunch together, make challah, go to evening Shabbat services, playing family games and basically just do lots of stuff together (my ex and I are on very friendly/not-romantically-involved terms).

All in all, it was a very satisfactory day that had me going to bed with a smile on my face for a change.
