Are you stuck to a grid?

Although I'm now using a battlegrid almost constantly for combat (a recent change, only instigated in the past 4 months), I by no means consider them essential for combat if you don't need 100% accuracy and have a fair DM.

However, I consider a grid absolutely essential for mapping purposes. An adventure that has a dungeon without a grid is one that I will NOT buy.

Cheers!

As a DM, most of my maps are sketched out on blank paper with just a suggested scale, and combat is run without visual aids (usually).

Here the same. But for certain combat situations, a map+grid+miniatures could really encourage "tactical fighting" since the features of the surroundings are far more prominent.
