(Oh dear, I should know better than to think I could write all this without several people answering before me.

I'll let Wicht answer that since the rules are new and everybody is learning, but per letter of the rules the only way of changing path is by sacrificing a tier per path transgressed on the spectrum from Light to Darkness.
Schematically it goes like this. (also when exchanging Light with Darkness, and Honor with Yakuza)
From Light to Honor - 1 tier sacrificed.
From Light to Sash - 2 tiers sacrificed.
From Light to Yakuza - 3 tiers sacrificed.
And since you cannot sacrifice a tier without going to white belt, you wouldn't normally be able to switch.
By the rules it seems possible to go from other paths into Light or Darkness by sacrificing tiers even if the fighter hasn't defeated a Dark/Yakuza or a Light/Honor fighter respectively. Is such a defeat still necessary, Wicht?
