Armor as Damage Reduction (how to make it work for you)

This system is very well reasoned and developed. Hopefully it will be picked up by a lot of users and eventually be published.

Hello again feydras! Thanks for the good press.

Just so people know what you're talking about, here are two new links that more directly steer people to the variant combat system.

This first link is to the variant combat system rules:

And this second link is to an "example of play" between two combatants using the variant combat system:

Enjoy.

nice work Kolja. Glad to see you posted the original Occult Slayer (and others) as well. :D
Hey Scott! Long time to no hear.

Everybody, Scott and I originally collaberated on the occult slayer together. We were both paid equally for that prestige class, but Dragon forgot to mention Scott's name in the occult slayer credits for some reason.

So how have you been Scott? You know what I've been up to now. Are you involved in Necromancer Games these days or simply promoting a company you like?

Hey Sonofapreacherman :)

I read through your variant combat system some days ago (3 or 4.. don't remember if I read something about this or not), and I just found this topic, and I got reminded of my halfhearted attempt at a similar sort of system I tried to make once.

When I was playtesting it in my campaign, one of my players kept aiming for the heads of his enemies (he was an archer, with a hefty bonus on his ranged attacks) to avoid the damage reduction (I made it into a Diminutive target, but he didn't care, since he'd hit anyway).
Any reason why that wouldn't work with this? It made enemies easier for him to beat you see, with targets who had EC 8-12 (+4 for Diminutive) or so without their AC added to it, and I didn't see why he wouldn't be able to aim for their heads instead of their entire body (which would be be easier to hit, but would have the AC to deal with). I even made them wear helmets one time, and he still aimed for the opening at the front with the +8 for Fine... (I guess he's still used to taking called shots, from when we played AD&D 2nd edition :o )

Not even sure if it's really a problem, it was just something I hadn't considered when I was making it, and I was wondering what your stance was on it. ;)

This is something i am trying to suggest get implemented as a optional rule for the combat variant. I think it is a great idea and would fit perfectly with the system. I would make called shots slightly harder to hit than just the standard size modifiers due to the better chance to hit the new EC as opposed to the old AC, otherwise, everyone will be making called shots. There are other things to consider, sonofapreacherman was interested in hearing about the idea to integrate this. A logical component of this would be piecemeal armor rules to take into account lesser armored locations. I am planning on typing up an entry about this on sonofapreacherman's website forums once i get the time. It'd be good to hear your comments and suggestions.

One of my favorite things about this is it gives a purpose!

Scott.

Sound like you are as busy as me. Please swing by the web site and tell me what you think (when you get a chance).

Hello Kavon.

I'm kind of in a rush right now, but I'd love to explore this idea more thoroughly on my message boards (as I check those more often). Here's a more direct link.

Either that or the link in my signature will get your there eventually.

Take care for now.
