D&D 5E (2024) Armor as THP?

This might be most fitting if armor is worn for, like, one pitched battle every once in a while - like it is in a war. However, it doesn't really support dungeon crawling or adventuring for weeks or months away from forges and craftsmen who repair armor.
Dunno. Mending is a cantrip.

there is a limit on what Mending can mend.

maybe if armor is reduced to less than half of it's temp HP, it needs a short rest and blacksmithing tools to "refill".

Not to gloss over the fact that it's also handing out free spells to anyone who wears armor.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. But it's one thing to make that choice. It's another thing together to pass it off as

I really like the idea of just using a d20 to hit and damage

1. You must hit AC 10 with a d20, anything higher than 10 is 1 point of damage.

2. Weapons give extra damage
- dagger = + 1
  • short sword + 2 etc..
  • add your strength bonus to damage
3. Armour and Dex increases the threshold before taking damage(or subtract from the ‘to hit roll)
- leather armour + Dec 14 = AC: 13 before you take damage

So, a fighter 5th level with 20 strength attacks someone in full plate(AC 20). They are using a great sword so their total damage = +5 str +6 great sword=+11

Total chance to hit=+8

They swing and roll a 14 for a total of 22 and do 2+11 damage for a total of 13

If the defender only had leather and an AC of 15, they’d have taken 18 damage.

Lightly armoured people would always take more damage as a result, on top of getting hit more often.

Mm, no. It is handing out a specific ability to take an hour (or longer, if you are using alternative rest rules) to grant temporary hit points to those with proficiency in blacksmithing (or other applicable) tools.

If someone asked for that as a spell, what level would it be? With an entire hour spellcasting time?

Mending
1 action
Restore 1d4 armor points
At higher level: at level 5 eestore 2d4, 11 restore 3d4, 17 restore 4d4

Small enough to not be worthwhile in combat (unless your an Armorer Artificer with some big bonus). But refillable with a few minutes work.

To start, I don't think we're all on the same page here. @mellowred is clearly referencing the spell Mending. It sounds like you are talking about repair as manual labor in your first statement, and as a spell in the second. There has also been discussion of if the hypothetical repair would require a long rest, short rest, or refresh immediately after combat.

To address your first point specifically: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you are talking about having the repair take place during a short rest . And my main problem with that is that I wouldn't consider mending armor to be resting. It's working. Work like blacksmithing is quite hard; the literal opposite of rest. To go further, it would also require tools and resources that haven't been accounted for yet.

To your second: The issue isn't creating a spell to do it. The issue is that this interpretation now implies anyone who wears armor can cast that spell. Which is a very different can of worms to open.

If a level 1 wizard can do it at-will with 1 action, then i don't see much issue with a fighter being able to repair armor over a short rest.

Besides, I expect half of it is grabbing your helmet that flew off, tightening laces that came loose, getting slime out of your boots, pulling arrows out of your shield, ect...
