The Advanced Player's Guide by Sword/Sorcery has armor damage rules;
I'm away from my books though and can't give you details.

armor dama

So am I just being anal or does it not make any sense? At some point, wouldn't a suit of leather armor just become so torn up, so cut and punctured that it is just useless? But then again there are no rules for weapons either so it is probably a mute point. I guess this is one of the suspension of beliefs we are supposed to have. Weapons don't get dull and armor is never tattered.

Actually, most weapons and armor do get dull and tattered, respectively.

It's just that, when everyone "rests for the night," one of the things that is assumed to happen is that everyone sharpens their knives and swords, hammers out dents in breastplates, reworks a couple rings in a suit of mail, and other general upkeep.

Unless you're a wizard, in which case you just prestidigitate all the hard work. :)

The way I rule this one is by telling my players everytime they are in a battle were they are made unconsious for in a battle with something large (dragon, giant, etc...) then they need to spend GP equal to half the price of the armor or take a reduction of half on the AC it provides because of all the broken/torn parts of the armor.

There are exceptions, I judge this on a case by case basis. If they are fighting a skilled assassin then the assassin will probably go for weak points in the armor and not the slash and crush mentality of a giant. So, basically, if they are in a situation where a lot of damage would be applied to the person (and therefore the armor), it needs to be fixed.
