Artifical Intelligences, why do they allways go bad?

Man, I don't know about your wife, but when my wife was watching that movie, AI's and the destruction of mankind took a FAR second to admiring Will's chisled physique... she especially liked the shower scene at the beginning.

She rather liked Troy for similar reasons. :D

I was wondering why my wife was willing to watch it twice.

Obviously, Smith reminder her of me. Right?

This plot is so common because some of the early writers came up with good stories using this storyline, and all the crappy hacks that have come sense have plagiarized it rather than come up with an original, good, storyline.

I have yet to see a compelling case why our computers could or would evolve into an AI, or why they would evolve into a super-intelligence. Humans didn't jump to human-level intelligence, why would a computer? I imagine the first AI will have the intelligence of, say, a sea cucumber, and the computer it's on will be reformatted pretty quickly to get rid of the malfunction.

There was a team trying to do that once. Don't know whatever happened to it. They were keying in "basic facts" into a program. Things like, "umbrellas aren't needed indoors" or "buses carry kids to school". Just basic stuff. Thing about all the *things* that you know about life that you take for granted, and then attempt to teach all that to a computer.

CYC? http://www.opencyc.org/ http://www.cyc.com/ Still going...

Back on topic - the machine minds of Iain M Banks Culture universe aren't insane. Or at least, Culture people will tell you that - those who view the Culture with fear, loathing or hostility might disagree.

Sorry Henry,
It was not my intention to post off topic stuff in the general boards. In my defense I was trying to set up a train of thought to build scenarios based around A.I.s.

Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks to everyone that posted I appreciate the feedback and the information. I know it will help me build a better scenario.

Keep it coming!

Because there's no cheap action when the machine handles everything perfectly and anticipates most problems. I'd rather see a movie about a society where things DO go perfectly and how they handle the millions of people it would make obsolete.

Yes, Transhuman Space the movie.

Posit that humans have intelligence. By observation - humans try to destroy and/or control each other. The children we create (and to an extent "program") do tend to turn on us, don't they? Thus, any intelligent being might try to destroy/control us. Simply put, the option exists, and therefore can make a story.

Yeah, but usually not a very *good* story. :)
