Artificer in July Dragon (possibly)

I think Bard will show up on DDI. There's also a distinct possibility it could show up in the Forgotten Realms alongside the Swordmage (which we KNOW is in the FR), since the Bard is a pretty integral part of that setting.

As for the Artificer, whoohoo! A great concept of a class. Just as long as it's not 3.5-magnitude broken, it should be nice.

I'm curious as to how they'll do it. Since magic items work very differently, this means the Artificer's mechanics will also need to change a fair bit.

Arcane Leader?

I Hope he'll be a Controller, since we miss a controller class at the moment while all the others have 2 or more. I hope they take the focus off mimicking arcane spells. Would be cool to have a whole power list of his own. I can imagine to have some sort of new ritual system for the Artificer, constructing weapons, armors etc before a battle.

I think they'll definitely be Leaders. Artificers in 3E were all about buffing up their comrades. My guesses:

Free Ritual Casting

Ability to "recharge" the per-day powers of magical items and utilize all implements

Clerics as leaders have an emphasis towards giving healing and defense to the party. Warlords as leaders have an emphasis to giving actions and bonuses on actions. I bet artificers as leaders will have an emphasis on giving more encounter/daily power uses to the party.

I'm sure Residuum will come into it somewhere.

That just made me think that a Green Star Adept could be reworked into someone who needs to ingest Residuum every day/week/fluff. I always hated the fluff for that PrC, though I liked some of the crunch.

Wait, artificers were overpowered in eberron? I always got the impression they were utterly useless in combat (worse than bards)
But then again I never played one nor did I really play in Eberron.

I would like to see Artificers have more then one tactic. IMC, the artificer uses Rapid Infusion to put bane X on his weapon. He uses most of his action points putting bane on throughout the adventure based on what we're facing (although he rarely spends more then one action point per day).

IME, artificers can be over powered if you give them too much money. They can have all the craft reserve in the world, but if they don't have money they can't make magic items. Money and time are the 2 things keeping artificers from running amok in the campaign. Hopefully some balance will be given to the class.

I had a reasonably effective melee artificer based around the Warforged Artificer substitution levels. And apparently wand-based 'blastaficer' artificers can pile up amazing amounts of damage.

But I'm guessing that they're arcane leaders in 4e; their intended schtick was mostly to act as a buff guy, and that means a leader role.
