Artificially increasing base speed

It's also important to keep in mind that the D&D movement rules- all wonkiness aside- don't assume you go the entire "overland travel" distance at one stretch. The rules specifically state that the creature doing the moving is assumed to be spreading this travel out over a full day of 16 hours or so, with plenty of rest breaks and meal breaks. Putting aside the notion of whether I or anyone else really have a move rate of 50, the fact is that going that fast for a full 8 hours is next to impossible for anybody except a serious marathon runner, just as genshou implied.
Funny thing is, that's exactly what I was thinking and I never intended to imply that with what I wrote. :o

I know there is one called Dash that increases your base move by 5'. It is in one of the Complete books.

I'd have no problem with a player exchanging his +1 stat increase for a +5 movement increase, though.

This one I'd agree to, +1 stat advancement at level in exchange for +5 movement. Changing it for +10 movement would be far too much IMO.

Base moves

Just to put up some food for thought, the base 30 ft movement rate is a 'normal' walk while running is (without the run feat) 120 ft in the same time. So if you take a 30 foot move and translate it into how fast can I run a mile you get a 4.4 minute mile, hardly slow or unreasonably fast for an adventurous sort. On the other hand simply saying that a person who walks fast, no offense to you delivery peeps out there, has a base more like 50 is ludicrous because of the math. You end up with a 2.64 minute mile. The world record according to wikipedia is: 3:43.13 Hicham El Guerrouj (MOR) 7 July 1999 Rome.

Sorry for the dose of math there, but I'm playing a scout right now and we needed to figure how fast he could run for something the other day and we were suprised to say the least. He has a base move of 70 (with items). Ewww. Needless to say its a good thing that D&D is fantasy because otherwise these fireball things would seem really wierd...

Anyway,
Drexes
