As you got sucked in to D&D, when did you know?

I have to ask, what is the Rei saga? I'm having Evangelion flashbacks.
To keep it short it involved dragons as planar visitors. Rei, the object of the group's affection was a black dragon trapped in human form. Our group was charged with keeping her safe from a group of malevelent red dragons who chased after her 'golden soul'. It also involved involuntary bodyswitches, a kender with an artifact level ring of regeneration, a suicidal half-dragon that later found out that Rei, our beloved was his mother, and a wizard who neglected spellcraft in order to sell drugs. We also brought forth evidence to Planar experts that led to Magmin being known as Constipated Fire Demons by the world at large. It all seems rather juvenile now, but back then I was having the time of my life.

(...going back through the Mists of Time...)

Okay, I got the Three Little Books on the Friday of Labor Day Weekend, 1976

By Monday I knew I had finally found my kinda game.

I had already gone through historical minis and AH/SPI boardgames -- they were okay, but only just.

Nope, roleplaying was my metre and I was happy to be home

Since then the longest I have gone without a game is 1 1/2 years... which was pure hell...

when i began to know most abstract rules by heart, and when i started posting here.
now i must start the cross over to 3.5.

For me it was realizing I carried DnD books with me to school, not school books. About this time was when I realized homework meant getting ready for the next session rather than doing Algebra.

Luckily I managed to still do some work in school. :)

When did you know that you were hooked and couldn't stop playing?

almost immediately. first session. we fought an orc in a 10 x 10 room with a chest full of treasure and a secret door behind him. :D

sixth grade first day of middle school. the kid sitting next to me in homeroom had a strange set of booklets in his school bag. i asked him about them. he invited me and the guy behind me over to his house for the weekend to play. his older brother (4 years older) was the referee. we played nonstop for the whole weekend. his parents were very cool.

the next weekend i had my own set of rules and ran it for the kids in my neighborhood. the rest is history.

I saw my friends playing BD&D in Civics class, circa 1988-89. It looked fun, and my friend Benny (not Mr Hill) agree to teach me using a solo adventure. I was hooked, and bought the AD&D 2ed Player's book, but didn't understand it at first.

Sooooo, one BD&D Red Box later, I was DM/Monty-Hauling my clueless friends
from 1st to 36th level! They were on their way to Immortal status,
and owned many lands in Mystra, when I stumbled upon some AD&D players
who invited me in. There, I learned about ACTUAL role-playing, advanced
rules, etc.

From there, it exploded to Cthulhu/BRP, Talislanta, Paladium, Cyberpunk, etc.

White Wolf was found in college while goth "clubbing" ;)

So, I'd say I was hooked from the start, judging by that rambling post. :D

D&D pretty much had me hooked before I ever even played. My older brothers went through brief periods of playing D&D with their friends and I wanted to join but they thought that I was too young. When I was about 8, a friend closer to my own age got the red box as a gift, and tried (mostly unsuccussfully) to run a few sessions before I persuaded him to lend it to me so I could take over as DM and never looked back.

It was 1981 (Basic Maroon Box set though most people call it the Red Box Set).

I'm not sure about anyone else, but the red box that I refer to is the one that's actually red, not maroon. It's the 1983 box with the Elmore painting of Warduke fighting a red dragon. That is Warduke, right?

My first moment of revelation was when I realized that I was creating characters for fun, at various levels... even when I didn't have a group for a 4 year period. No one but me to share 'em with, I realized I was rolling up PC's and giving 'em name, class, levels, backgrounds...

Of course, they came in handy when I was designing NPC's for my campaigns years later. :)
