Assassins in PHB3

I think there will be an "illusionist", but it sounds like the Beguiler is going to get divided between the Bard and a bunch of Psionic classes, since the psionic classes now have the more exclusive rights to charm type powers.

Remember that the Arcane controller came out in a setting book. There could easily be three Psionic classes in the PHB2 and a fourth in the setting (Darksun?).
Err ... you mean "remember that the arcane controller came out in the original PHB", because it's the wizard ;) I don't think setting book classes should be considered for what source/role will be in the next book. Recall that swordmage and artificer are both going to be in addition to the total of 4 arcane classes which have been published in PHB1 (wizard and warlock) and 2 (sorcerer and bard).

My money's on Shadow, Ki, and Psionic power sources for PHB3, with a 2/2/4 class split. Then PHB4 will have the remaining 2 classes for two of those power sources, along with a complete 4 classes for a new source. Just seems to make sense to me to mirror their release plan from the first two PHB's.

What, no one think that ShadowMages and other stuff from the Tome of magic will also appear even though they were a PROTO 4E class?
"Proto 4e"? Don't think so. But either way, the class was mainly about a different set of mechanics. Once you take that away (since mechanically all 4e classes drink from the same well), there's not much left that couldn't be folded up into a necromancer.

The Shadowcaster established the use of shadow to mean mirrors and reflections, which is the same theme that animates the existing Shadow power source material.

Whoops, I meant Arcane Defender. I was more conrned with filling out the roles than the total number. And I'm wiling to bet that Arcane, Divine, and Martial will always be ahead in the total number of classes.

Yeah, I figured. No worries :)

Well, WotC has said they aren't going to worry about filling every source/role combination if they can't find something that works. Which is probably why we haven't seen a martial controller.

I think you're on the money that Arcane, Divine, and Martial will be ahead with total number of classes. Especially Arcane - as of Tuesday, there will be 6 published arcane classes, as opposed to 4 for primal, divine, and martial. I think that it would probably be wise to 'forget' about setting book classes (like the swordmage) for the purposes of predicting what the proportions of classes by source and role will be in future PHB's. But that's just me :)
