Don't get me wrong; if someone comes in and is justtalking to me about high prices I don't mind because, yes, they are stupidly high. It's the abusive and/or people who blame me specifically. Example:

I bought a brand new car a month ago, 2005 Toyota Corrola. Some nob last night came in and said:

"F***, no wonder you can afford a new care with the price you charge for petrol."

To which I responed:

"Sorry, I have nothing to do with the price of petrol."

He, in turn, responded with:

"You rob us blind to fill your own pockets."

I finished serving him and walk away.

Maybe this is cultural differences, but is a Toyota Corolla a "fancy" car down-under? In the states it's the kind of car you haul kids to soccer practice and practically everyone owns (ie belly-button car).

That's it! Find the adress of the oil company, and some appropriate person there to whom send a letter. Then, everytime a guy complains, give him the adress and tell him to write a letter. And don't forget to ask him if he is going to do it, or if he just intends to complain uselessly to the employee at the petrol station.

In any case, remember all that the major worldwide oil crisis is nearing. Just 5 to 10 years and the worst is coming...

Yeah it's a small car, only 4-cylindar... which comes in handy with rising fuel prices ;)

While I have gotten quite upset, I am generaly aware that I am dealing with people who often have little control over the situation, and find that by acknowledging that, and stating up front "I'm not mad at you, I'm mad about this situation," it tends to keep people at ease and things tend to get done much faster.

I've worked in Retail, in a Help Desk situation (as an on call as well), so I understand.

Dumbest thing I can remember - A woman was quite irate that I couldn't help her immediately because I was in my car driving home (I was 2 minutes away when I told her this), and hung up on me. I found out later, that had called and gotten the other on call for the month, who was eventualy able to help her, but had been in a similar position. This, of course, was someone who worked for the same company (It was an internal help desk).

I've got a much better idea! ;) Read on what Eternalknight could say next time:

So I answered: In fact, last time someone like you accused me of such a theft, I sued him. With the money I got, I bought the Toyota Corrola (plus a house). :)

That's quite the idea, may work in the sue-happy U.S., but I'm not sure about Australia.

Nothing wrong with them at all. I was commenting about why's it a big deal that you bought one. :uhoh: I guess some people are just dumb or clueless.

People just like to have someone to blame. The blame game seems to be the world's most popular activity nowadays.

My fiancee, for example, works for a small non-profit agency that provides certification to addiction counselors. Oregon doesn't require all addiction counselors to be certified, but if they work for a state-funded agency they do have to be certified. All the agencies know this. It's been this way for years. Yet every time a new certification testing cycle comes around, he gets dozens of last-minute phone calls from people who want to get into the testing, and they don't have all of the required education and training. They tell him that someone else at their agency told them they didn't need to have such-and-such requirement to get into the exam. Then they get mad at my fiancee when he tells them that the person at their agency was mistaken, they do need that requirement, and it's been that way for 10 years.

I used to run into the same thing when I handled disability claims. People would call up and tell me their employer told them such-and-so about their insurance policy, and then get mad at me when I told them that information was incorrect. As if their employer knew more about insurance than I did, when all I did 40 hours a week was handle insurance claims!!

Like I said, people just want someone to blame, and they unfortunately pick on the nearest available person. Don't let it get to you, Eternalknight. :)
