Atlantis: Second Age (The Arcanum of old)

Uh oh....

I am afraid that if it isn't d20, I won't buy it. Sad but true. For fantasy, it is d20 for my group.

I suppose I could live with the Tal 4 system, but only because the Tal20 is out and I could convert. But maybe not. I can convert it now from D20

Why would one not do it in D20?

That post hurt.

Agreed on that. Just look at the wildly successful sales of Decipher's LotR RPG. Sarcasm intended.

Ummm ... Maybe because there already is a glut of third party d20 products on the market now, and third party companies producing d20 products have been seriously hurting over the past two years?

Anyway, I think it would be most prudent for them to try to produce a 'system neutral' version of Arcanum, with free pdfs on how to use the materials for d20, GURPS, OAD&D, etc. available on a website.

Just my two platinum pieces.

The 'glut' isn't really an issue. I have an FLGS north of Pittsburgh. I stock GURPS, WoD, D20 (I include SW in this bucket), and OGL. The D20 and OGL do sell well. The WoD and GURPS really don't sell well. And I haven't sold book one of either Star Trek or LotR RPG by Decipher.

I recommend the system be D20 or make it OGL as Mongoose did with Conan. I wouldn't go with a 'system neutral' version...with PDF downloads. They'll lose the sales from folks who just want the 'crunchy' bits.

Thanks,
Rich

Hey all,

Just wanted to drop in and let you know that we are not ignoring you. Yes, we are working on a new version of the classic Atlantean trilogy from the 80's. Beyond that, I'm afraid it is far to early to go into any details on what will, or will not be in the new game.

That said, please feel free to continue posting about Atlantis and let us know what you hope to find in the new version. We have not yet settled on anything hard and fast so your commnets can still influence what we do with the game. For example, which system to you guys want to see? d20? Tal4 rules? GURPS? Class and levels or skill based? How many books? One big one like Tal4 or a few smaller ones? Etc, etc, etc.

After all is said and done we are hoping to release this game just before xmas if all goes well.

Cheers,

Scott, this is great news. I used this setting in the 80's and loved it. As I said above, I would go with either D20 or OGL. This is based on personal preference as well as the sales here at my store (granted, only been open a month now.)

Along with D20, I would do classes and levels (that difference in class types to OD&D made using the original fun.)

The 'One big book' possibility may not work well. If you push $50 for one book, you may price yourself out. I would go with a segmented approach of $20 to $35 for each book. These sell well in my limited experience so far here at the store.

I'll initially stock the items in whatever mechanic incarnation it is, just out of pure nostalgia.

Thanks,
Rich
