Attacked on introduction?

Agent Oracle

First Post
Warning: The following post is nearly all me kevetching about a gaming group i'll probably never play in again.

I should have known that there was a problem when I arrived at the game store and found out that one of the players was banned from entering.

The GM strikes me as being a nice guy. he drove a long way to be able to play in the game tonight, and he's happy to have a fourth player. I'm playing with one other guy my age (early 20's by my guess), and two kids Like, middle-school kids. One of these kids is the problem player.

Now, I hear out the other players, who vouch for him, say he's an allright guy. Tell me his parents banned him from the store because he got a bad grade on his last (last) report card. So I suggest that we walk over to a nearby Large Chain Bookstore (tm) and play in their Overpriced Coffee Cafe (tm). We go over there, and chat while I roll up a 2nd level human knight.

Now, the game is taking place in Faerun, so I rolled up a Knight of the not-yet purple dragon variety. And went into the game ready for whatever.

I should have also known that there was a problem when above-mentioned banned player attempts to roll a spot check to see what kind of bodily function an NPC is doing off in the woods.

I really should have known there was a problem when he had his wizard SPRINT to try and run the mile and a half between me (on horseback, on the road ahead) and him (on foot, on the same road).

I should have known there was a problem when the 2nd level wizard (again, banned player) ran up and tried to use his staff as a double weapon against the "suprise" encounter (warg attack).

But what really ticked me off was when he attacked me...

The GM told me to come up with a backstory... thinking fast, I went to Authurian legends. the questing beast. I was chasing the questing beast.

For those of you that don't know, the Questing Beast never existed... well, it was VERY real to the man that persued it, but otherwise it was ficticious. It was used as an excuse to set a knight to wander forever in search of that which did not exist, think, holy grail but not even theoretical.

Well, he asks what a questing beast is. The DM tells him to make a knowlege (nature) roll. He rolls a 16, plus intelligence and ranks, that's 22. The DM tells him that he dosn't know what a questing beast is. I described the questing beast, making it some absurd combination of tiger, stork, snail and elk. The GM confirmed that he STILL didn't know what a questing beast was. He told me that no such thing existed. I, being a knight, defended my honor and insisted that I was under royal command to find the questing beast and exterminate it.

He told me that no such thing existed, and then he said (to the DM) "I cast Magic missile at him"

Alignment LG, he's NG. INT 18. Wis 14.

I'm a knght. Six feet tall, big axe. Lotsa hit points and a good AC. He's a wizard.

The DM is dumbstruck. I am too.

I ask: "Do you really mean you're attacking me?"

"Yes! I'm casitng magic missile at you! You don't believe me!"

"Allright. Pick up that d4, and roll it. Once you do, there's no turning back."

He grabs the d4 and rolls... 4. he declairs 4 damage. I kindly remind him that a magic missile does +1 damage, so it's really 5 points. He smiles and keeps twirling his pencil as i mark off the damage on my character sheet. I have 18 hp left.

Pet NPC grapples him. I can't attack a hempless foe, so I tell the NPC to let the wizard go, since he insulted my honor and attacked my person. The DM botches his next opposed grapple roll, and the wizard gets free, and

I draw my Axe and tell him to draw his weapon as well, declairing a knight's challenge on him. he passes the will save, so I don't get the bonus, but it was worth a shot.

He draws a wand of magic missiles, and then casts mage armor on himself. (which, I just realized is two standard actions)

I attack him, and hit. (no suprise) dealing 8 points of damage, which leaves the wizard with 2 hp.

I ask if he will yeild. He casts Sleep on me. Knights have great will saves, so I pass mine easily.

I attack again. his 18 AC (high Dex and mage armor) means that I miss this round.

He casts Ray of Frost at me, and misses.

I attack and KO him.

THe GM is dumbstruck throughout this. He's never seen anything like this happen before. The group has no divine caster, (the favored soul had taken off that night)

I remind the wizard that he has a 10% chance of stabilizing each round. I give him the percentile dice, and he starts rolling. he gets down to -8 before the GM's Pet NPC forces a healing potion down his throat.

The GM and I are asking this guy point blank why he would do this. He said that He did it because of his character's Ego.

Now, apparently, this PC is important. he has a sheet of cursed paper or something that hurts people that try to destroy it and that he can't get rid of. The last hour of the night is the player trying to justify to the DM why his character did that, even to the point of the DM taking the player on some kinda head trip with that magical little slip of paper. I excuse myself, citing an early work day tomorrow. I give the GM my contact info. And tell the problem player that my character will see to it that his character will rot in the darkest dungeon that law enforcement will provide. He starts talking about how he's gonna escape from jail. The DM starts tellin him how very, VERY wrong he is.

That's the point where I took my leave. I don't know if i'm ever going back. If They drop me a good E-mail, i might. but you know, it's hard to get over that kind of a welcome.

The other thing I find amusing is that he could have easily beaten you, I'm presuming your knight was wearing at least medium armor (20 Mv.) and he had a 30 mv. If he had just moved 90ft away he could then have just alternated dbl moves, running, and peppering you with magic missiles.

Anyway at least you got a funny story out of it. LOL

It's sad to hear this kind of story, though not really all that surprising. You're talking about a middle-school kid. Some middle-school kids are surprisingly mature for their age. Most of them are not.

And as far as the wizard automatically winning. I'm not sure how it would play out if they were both on foot, but if the wizard started running...the knight has a horse.

Stories like this cause me a great deal of concern as I begin the search for a new gaming group.

Don't let it get you down. These stories are the minority. It's just they are also the more interesting, so get told and remembered more often.

After all, how many groups have you met that actually attacked a gazebo, or tried to use the Head of Vecna?

Back in the days, I did play in a club on friday nights. We were all aged 20 to 25 or so. Then, one night, at 11 PM, a boy enters and asks to join the group. The DM decides to be kind with this youngster (maybe 12 or 13 of age) and let him in. Quickly the boy becomes odious, insulting the other players (I especially remember: "Hey the cleric! You should put your mace deep in your ass!", said for no reason at all. I also remember his intelligent magical flying sword that protects his PC from all attacks, that the DM has a hard time explaining he won't allow it). We, the other players, don't know exactly how to deal with this boy nobody knows, so we don't say much when he insults us. Then, at 2 AM in the night, an angry woman suddenly enters the gaming room. It's the boy's mother who screams at him and then takes him back home. He had left the house discreetly without his parents being aware of it. But then the mother had suspected something and knew where she would find him. Aaaah... the good old days! :p

One, I've run this encounter for second level 3.0 dnd characters at the local gamers club, 2 of the participants were at the local boarding school as a result of scholarships, 2 were 6th formers the other player left the table (and apparently laughed himself stupid whilst not getting in the way of the others enjoyment)

I...I can;t beleive what I'm hearing!

Am I to understand that someone played D&D with a stranger who turned out to be socially retarded!

Holy Moly :uhoh:

(OK, that's probably enough sarcasm from me)
