Attn: Paradigm any word on Unveiled Masters?

Gez, please stop posting close-up pictures of mind flayer crotches. It makes me feel dirty. My only consolation is that their robes make it impossible to know the toe.

:) I'm not sure they have a "toe" (I learn English slang everyday, thank you). They don't reproduce sexually.

Hello Wulf,

There will be some sort of addendum stating that Mind Flayers are the IP of WOTC and used with their express permission.

Now, I believe that all the Feats, PClasses, spells, Psionic items, the Flesh-Craft skill and Flesh-Crafted Items, etc will be Open.

What we (PCI) plan to do is swap out our own replacement for our friendly Calamari-faced villains (We call them the Voiceless Ones) and proceed as best we can with future products.

We've had plans for Mind Flayers in our Arcanis world setting and hoped to use all the material from Unveiled Masters to support it.
Obviously, we now can't without a bit of creative tweaking.

But that's fine. We view this as an opportunity to make Arcanis even more unique and intersting.

I guess I've rambled off the subject and have probably given you more info than what you were looking for.

Bottom line, there's ALOT in the book that should be OGL even after the SRD finalization.

Best,

Not really. You actually answered a few of my unasked questions. ;)

Essentially I am looking for the Open Content replacement for the Mind Flayers-- one that all of us publishers can get behind. I am impressed enough with even these small glimpses of Unveiled Masters that I am hoping you guys will lead the way!

Heh -- Henry and I were talking about them earlier today.

So far I think we got a really, really good and creepy start!

I'm already itching to draw the Voiceless Ones. . . .

Hey Henry, sign me up to work on the Voiceless Ones too!

I had fun trying to break away from the Illithid mythos for the Mind Flayers book, it will be even more fun connecting the Voiceless Ones to the work I did on the Mind Flayers.

Including connecting their gods to the Pantheon of Arcanis, of course...

Hmm....

Think the rest of this had better go to email!

And, from an even older sourcebook, the illithiad:

Yeah -- I see what you mean. I will say, in my own defense, that I wasn't looking at any other Flayer art than the cover for UM when I was doing the piece with the skull-chain.

I agree with Ryan's statements on the difficulty of recreating the critters from the SRD. Made all the harder when there's only one real understanding of what the critter can look like.

It's a good thing we're moving on to The Voiceless Ones. . . .

The Voicelessssss Onesssss are coming. . . . .

Voiceless Ones

Hello gentlemen,

Thanks Wulf. I'm glad you enjoyed the small preview. Wait until you see the final version!!!!

I'm all for having an OGL replacement for Mind Flayers. If you (the other D20 publishers) think that the Voiceless Ones have that potential and quality to do so, then I doubt anyone at PCI will have any objections.

Especially when you take into account that the VERY talented Richard Pace and Jason Parent are going to help design these creatures of malevolence.

To Richard and Jason: OK guys, let me get some notes together and we'll finalize the design, look and story behind them. ;-)

Best,

That's my hope... Unless you find that you want to retain them as PI, which would be all of our loss.

Circumstances seem to have put you in a position to be the definitive source for Open Content illithid-kin. I am sure I am not the only publisher who had big plans for them as villains, and I am not at all interested in diluting that mythos even further by insisting on publishing my own spin. I'd love to send my own readers back to you through the OGL.

Keep me posted on your progress!

How dare they claim they invented Mind Flayers

How can WOTC claim that Mind Flayers are THEIR intelectual property. Back in the day, the mind flayer was a major rip off from call of Cthulu. If you look in the old Dieties and Demi Gods, the one with the Cthulu mythos in it, you will see what I mean from the illustration there. Cthulu looks exactly like what D&D calls mind flayers in order to avoid copyright infringement. As far as I am concerned, if you want to publish something with mind flayers, use the EXACT SAME STATS as the D&D version (maybe change 1 thing to appease WOTC) and call the creature a Cthulian. This will actually give credit to the source of these creations, HP Lovecraft, who invented the Cthulu stories.
