I avoided the Great Houses, and Dragonmarks, thinking those were going to be very common elements of the submissions.

That's an interesting gamble. As the novels are meant to support Eberron, I worked as much Eberron theme into my submission as I could.

Some good news for me. I phoned WotC customer service and they gave me a street address, so I was able to overnight courier my entry to there. I'm just hoping they forward it to the correct dept by close of business today.

*crosses fingers*

EDIT: thanks for the link, BG

Well, I used a bunch of Eberron theme material in the submission, just chose to highlight those areas which I think might get overlooked in many submissions.

Plus, this novel is part of a series of "War Torn" books, so I'm thinking there's a better than average chance that one or more books in the series will already deal with Dragon Marks, the Great Houses, Syberris marks, and what not.

Ultimately though, I just felt my best submission idea was stronger without the Great Houses or dragon marks - in both cases, they would have been themes which would have had to be shoehorned into my submission and plot, weakening both.

I subbed. The final version of my synopsis and chapter section is at work, and I'll post it tomorrow, but the short version is something like this:

Skil had the makings of a great minstrel, but in the Last War, Breland used her changeling skills to turn her into a spy... and then later turned her out of a job. Now she wanders the land as a con artist, using the skills Breland taught her to steal her day's pay, along with Reliance, a warforged pickpocket who quite literally has a heart of coal.

When Skil and Reliance hear about a small town in the Eldeen Reaches that is still waiting for the return of its local heroine, a paladin who left after a prophetic dream to fight in the Last War, it seems like an easy mark. The paladin will almost definitely not be returning, since Skil herself killed her late in the war, and it's a simple matter to do a little research, put on a new face, and ride into a town a paladin, ready to take whatever gifts they bestow and get out of town with none the wiser.

But when a dragonmarked sorcerer who was secretly in love with the lost paladin becomes suspicious of Skil's story, things get complicated... and when a dark horde of fiends surrounds the town and the townsfolk look to their recently returned hero to save them, Skil and Reliance are forced to use all their skills to pull off the biggest con of their lives...

That's not exactly how I wrote it (I explained things in more detail), but that's more or less the feel I was going for.

Bummer. According to the WotC boards, I'm s-outta-l on account of not having a changeling, a warforged, and a dragonmarked character.

Oh, wait... I do.

Woohoo!

On the other hand, some naive folks might think that better pre-reqs for the open call would be "Capturing the feel that the WotC people are looking for" or "Ability to write". But, you know, mileage may vary...

A changeling as an evil henchman? Check.
Dragonmarked House intrigue? Check
Evil Mastermind with a Name and Disposition Remarkably Similar to a Famous Bond Villain? Check!
Warforged? Errr... nope... guess not. Whoops... I'm screwed!
Lightning Rail? Check.
A fight ON TOP of the Lightning Rail? Double Check!
Demons. Gotta have demons. ;)
