Austin, TX Game Day

I agree that DL might be a tad tight if we get a good crowd. What other options are there? any one got any ideas?
I say that we make the first step of finding a "where" to have it then we can figure out when and who will run games, etc.

I am more than willing to set this up with DL but if there is a better place someone can come up with I will help with that as well.

Location, location, location

Where is always the hardest. On and off for the last year or so I've been looking for places to run an RPGA convention (enough room for 10 tables at the same time), and I haven't had much luck. Admittedly, some of my difficulty is due to not owning a car so I don't have the ability to drive around and look for locations.

Some suggestions:
VFW/Rotary/Lions club halls: My dad is in VFW and I remember them doing dinners and stuff at their meeting hall (in Wisconsin) all the time. I'm not sure if getting access to these kinds of facilities requires a member of those organizations, but I can't imagine that they charge all that much.
Empty retail/warehouse space: With the economy still sluggish, there are quite a few empty storefronts and warehouses around. Someone I know rented one out for a halloween party and it worked fine. Now in January, it might be a bit trickier if the buildings utilities (particularly heat) are not turned on....
College Rooms: If there is cooperation with a local campus group (like The Guild at UT), it might be possible for the group to reserve a decent space on Campus. The greatest problem with this (from my experience) is that parking around UT is a pain, but then again you'll be making the Game Day more accessible to the college students.

There's actually a little club/party room you can rent out at my apartment complex. I don't know how much it costs, though, and I don't know how many people it can comfortably hold. I'm way out in northwest Austin, right near the intersection of 2222 and 620. But if you folks are interested, I'll pop in at the office and find out details on the room.

Bloody heck...if its going to be that far out of town, may as well have it at the Oasis ;)

So far only a dozen+ posters have spoken up about being interested in an Austin Games Day. Maybe DL may fit the bill? I know there were only 2 dozen people at Dallas Games Day from EN world and the rest of the crew were from RGPA.

Does DL have a back room for extra game tables? Or would it just be people strune around the store?

UT has tons of rooms, but the bureacracy at UT is pretty rigorous. You'll have to have a date in mind and a check in hand before you get your room, chairs, and tables (I use to work for the university when I went to school there). Tons of places to eat around that part of town, everything in walking distance, but also tons of traffic and parking issues for people driving in.

Another option for rental which may be less pricey is community rec. centers. We have DGD at a rec room, everyone pitched in $2 per game and it covered the price of the rental. The rec center also had all the tables and chairs for us. I think there was a rec center in south Austin.... maybe near Manchaca??? Memory fails me. I'm getting old....

Hope this helps. Back to physiological adaptations.....
-suzi *can I stop writing now* yee

p.s. I just peaked over at Boston Game Day and they are actually having it at Piratecat's house. **Not that I would want to wish a couple of dozen gamers on my house... but that is also another option if anyone is in a situation that could and would want to do that.

Not really....

An Austin game Day. Steve and I were just discussing a Dallas Game day in early December. Perhaps an Austin Game Day would work as well.

We could lump on down, bring gobs of support material, sell some stuff, give prizes away and eat sardines to annoy people (being trolls).

We also might be able to attract a few people throught he Castle and Crusade Society. Many playtesters are stretched out between Houston and Dallas for several of our upcoming games and such.

We could play 12 non-stop hours of Cleaver the Pit, 2-4 games of Castles and Crusades, Planet Busters and mock up several other games in production.

Sounds interesting. I will drop a few feelers out on our boards and see what comes of it.

*Drools at gobs of support material and 12 hours of gaming.... but not so much at the sardines.*
