Avatars of War miniatures

Their miniatures are fantastic. I know several people who fork out the $$$ for them as special characters for Warhammer Fantasy Table Top (not WHFRP). They are astounding and very detailed.

I am not familiar with the company.

The miniatures on the other hand....

I bought a bundle deal through Fantization when they first hit U.S. shores some time ago.

When dealing with smaller companies, you often have a higher price in the old minis field. Andreas miniatures are up there too.

However, for what the figures are, "Lords/Champions", they're actually about the same price as the Games Workshop heroes/unique characters.

I had never heard of them until yesterday. I was looking for a Goblin King, this guy:

but it sells for about $20 (that includes shipping from Spain). I dunno, he's really really sweet, but i rarely spend that much on a mini. Plus, i'd have to spend many hours painting him.

There is a market for High priced minis out there. Plus having a higher profit margin can benefit a small company a good deal. The market for more affordable figures is already taken by many companies. Small companies know those who are already happy with the current metal and plastic offerings probably were not their target audience. By selling fewer figs at a higher profit margins to those willing to pay premium prices for HQ minis, they can be better off than trying to sell many more figs to masses.

Myself, I'm looking at the Zombie Wolves from Gamezone Miniatures.

Those minis are pretty nice, but the level of detail is so high that 99% of mini painters out there won't be able to paint them to a standard high enough that it'd make a difference.

And the 1% that can paint that well can make a $4.50 mini from Reaper look very nearly as good, when they're done with it.

In fact, the painted minis they have posted on their own site aren't painted well enough to really take advantage of all the detail - some of it gets lost under the layers of paint.

I ordered the Dark Elf Hero and like it but don't love it, and am a bit disappointed because of two problems:

1) The metal version isn't nearly as nice as the original "green" version that is advertised on the website. I don't know if this is unique to Avatars of War or if the green versions always look nicer. It has made me a little hesitant to buy a mini when I haven't seen the metal version.

2) It is very hard to put together--there are four small pieces that need to be glued on and all of them don't seem to be exact fits. I haven't decided yet what to do.

That said, I don't regret purchasing it--partially because I like supporting small companies but also because the miniature IS still good, just not any better than a well-done Reaper mini (and 2-3 times the cost). Sort of like Games Workshop :]

I'm surprised that GW isn't hard on their asses about those models - they're very obviously base on GW's IP, and GW certainly haven't been shy about being litigious in the past.

I cannot tell from your post if you are used to putting together GW/Confrontation/etc. high-end minis-- they are *all* like that! :D

Anyway, I would just google around for using green stuff to putty in the cracks; it helps seal the bond as well. I assume that you will need to pin the model together, also, so look for those links as well for advice. There might be some of this in Pogre's great list o'painting links.

(And, on topic, spending $20 on a mini is freakin' crazy.)
