Avenger with a reach weapon

If an avenger is using a reach weapon and attacks his target does he still benefit from the Oath of Enmity? Or would he still need to have the target adjacent to him?

Unfortunately Adjacent means Adjacent. So by RAW no you would not get to take advantage of your Oath of Enmity with the reach of a reach weapon.

Plus, I'm not sure how much a reach weapon would benefit an Avenger otherwise anyway. They're already very mobile and they have very good defenses for a Striker.

The flavor or a reach weapon also seems wrong.

Well, flavor wise I could see a reach weapon Avenger. Grasping Weapon, Pursuing Avenger. hehehehe. I think it would be kind of a cool thing. "Thought you could get away from me, did you?" <drags victim back kicking and screaming> lol.

Yeah, I was relatively certain that was the case. I have in mind an elven avenger of Sehanine who uses a greatspear. I can still do this, I just won't be using the reach property of the spear often.

I know I could use a greatsword and get the same modifiers without spending a feat, but this character is a hunter not a swordsman. He is going to multiclass with ranger and go Horizon Walker for his paragon path.

I plan on him being highly mobile using stealth and a mix of ranged attacks via his bow and spear attacks to take down his prey.

Hrm, ranged attacks with Avenger seem kind of inefficient. You're not getting your Oath double-roll, after all, so your hit rate is going to go down.

I'm honestly unsure of what the most efficient multiclass would be for Avenger.

Druid, maybe? An Avenger of some wrathful nature god...

Or a Shaman, and refluff the spirit companion as the last enemy killed by your Oath, who's bonded to you until it fulfills some purpose only you know.

Probably best determined by your particular character flavor. I've recently built one up with Sly Dodge (the MP Rogue multi-class) for a devious Retribution Avenger, picking up Bluff training and a once-per encounter OA dodge bonus.
